Goldeyes Rout Milkmen in Opener
FRANKLIN, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-25) scored early and often Monday evening, en route to a lopsided 15-4 victory over the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field.
The Goldeyes took the lead shortly after the game got underway, as shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder tripled to right field and came home on a throwing error. Before the inning was through, left fielder Keshawn Lynch belted his first home run of the season – a two-run blast to left that also scored third baseman Ramón Bramasco, making it 3-0.
Winnipeg added five more runs in the second. Didder brought his Aruban countryman, designated hitter Jiandido Tromp, home with a sacrifice fly to right field. Then, centre fielder Noah Marcelo lined a double to left that drove in first baseman Kevin García and catcher Raphaël Pelletier to make the score 6-0. Second baseman Adam Hall singled to left to plate Bramasco, and Marcelo crossed the plate on Lynch’s groundout to third base, giving the Goldeyes an 8-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, García hit a home run to left with Tromp aboard, making it 10-0 Winnipeg.
Milwaukee (29-18) responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Left fielder Andy Blake lined a base hit to left that brought catcher Andrew Sundean and first baseman Griffin Doersching home, cutting the deficit to 10-2.
The two clubs then traded single runs over the next four innings. In the top of the fifth, Didder doubled to left driving in García before the Milkmen answered with a home run to right by designated hitter Wendell Marrero in the sixth.
The Goldeyes made the score 12-3 in the seventh when Didder hit his second sacrifice fly of the contest, this one to centre field, allowing Pelletier to trot in. Once again Milwaukee replied with a run in the eighth. Shortstop Delvin Pérez doubled to centre, driving in Blake to make it 12-4.
If the game wasn’t already well out of reach, Winnipeg made certain of it in the top of the ninth. Bramasco’s base hit to centre drove in Pelletier. Didder came in on Marcelo’s groundout to shortstop, and Hall’s double to right scored Bramasco for a 15-4 Goldeyes lead.
Ryo Kohigashi (W, 3-2) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Derrick Cherry, James Bradwell, Tasker Strobel, and James Colyer gave up just two hits over the remainder of the ballgame.
Juan Díaz (L, 4-3) started for the Milkmen and lasted just 2 1/3 innings. He surrendered ten runs – seven earned – on eight hits while fanning four and walking one.
Didder, Marcelo, and Lynch each drove in three for Winnipeg, while Lynch and Tromp recorded three hits apiece.
The series continues Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with veteran left-hander Mitchell Lambson (3-4, 7.00 ERA) scheduled to start for the Goldeyes. Milwaukee will counter with Canadian righty Christian Young (5-2, 4.57 ERA).
