ROSEMONT, IL – Behind a late-inning surge, the Chicago Dogs (15-29) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 13-3 at Impact Field Saturday evening.
Chicago scratched across a run in the bottom of the first inning when centre fielder Giovanni DiGiacomo came home on left fielder Jacob Maiben’s fielder’s choice.
Winnipeg (20-25) responded with three runs in the top of the second. Left fielder Jiandido Tromp scored on a throwing error before third baseman Keshawn Lynch drove in right fielder Max Murphy with a single to centre field. Finally, Lynch came in on shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder’s base hit up the middle that made it 3-1.
The Dogs evened the score in the fourth. First baseman Tyreque Reed doubled off the wall in right field to plate catcher Jaxx Groshans, then right fielder Zack Stokes crossed the plate on second baseman Daniel Harris’ groundout to shortstop.
Groshans gave Chicago a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning when he led off with a home run to left field.
What had been a tight game all evening fast became a rout after that, with the Dogs scoring five times in the seventh inning and adding four in the eighth.
In the seventh, designated hitter Aaron Altherr made the score 5-3 with a base hit down the third base line that brought in third baseman Derek Maiben. Groshans followed with a sacrifice fly to right that allowed shortstop Cooper Weiss to score. Stokes made it 7-3 when he lined a single to left that drove in Jacob Maiben. Lastly, Harris hit a two-run single to left that brought Altherr and Stokes around, giving the home side a 9-3 advantage.
An inning later, DiGiacomo scored on Weiss’ line drive single to centre. Altherr drove in Weiss with a base hit to left and Harris doubled to centre field, plating Groshans and Stokes.
Steven Lacey (W, 3-3) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings of work. He struck out six and walked two. Austin Eaton (S, 3) pitched the final three innings and gave up just one hit.
Kevin Vaupel (L, 1-3) went six innings for the Goldeyes. He surrendered four runs on ten hits while striking out three and walking one batter. James Bradwell, Derrick Cherry, and Weston Lombard followed out of the bullpen.
