Milkmen Escape Late Goldeyes Push
FRANKLIN, WI – The Milwaukee Milkmen (30-18), the top team in the American Association, held on to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-3 at Franklin Field Tuesday evening.
After 4 1/2 scoreless innings, Milwaukee struck first in the bottom of the fifth when left fielder Andy Blake led off the frame with a home run to left field.
Winnipeg (21-26) quickly evened things in the top of the sixth. Right fielder Roby Enríquez lined a single to left field that scored second baseman Keshawn Lynch, tying the game 1-1.
The Milkmen retook the lead in the seventh on designated hitter Wendell Marrero’s double to right field that drove in shortstop Delvin Pérez.
Once again, the Goldeyes drew even, as designated hitter Adam Hall scampered home on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to make it 2-2.
Milwaukee went ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. First, second baseman Yordys Valdés came home on a wild pitch to give the Milkmen the lead. Marrero then hit a sacrifice fly to centre field that brought in first baseman Griffin Doersching.
Winnipeg pulled to within one in the top of the ninth when catcher Raphaël Pelletier scored on third baseman Ramón Bramasco’s groundout to shortstop. The Goldeyes had the tying run at third base with one out, but shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder was cut down on a fielder’s choice.
Neither starter factored in the decision. Christian Young went 5 2/3 innings for Milwaukee, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out five and walked two. Goldeyes starter Mitchell Lambson worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while fanning five and issuing one walk.
