SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-34) were held to just one hit in a rain-shortened 2-0 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries (34-25) Tuesday evening at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Canaries opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Mike Hart singled home Jabari Henry to make it 1-0. Sioux Falls added to their lead in the sixth as Matt Ruiz drove in Trevor Achenbach with an RBI single for the game’s final run.
Storm clouds rolled in during the bottom of the seventh, bringing heavy rain that forced a 45-minute delay. After officials deemed the field unplayable with more rain on the way, the game was called after six-plus innings.
Ryan Zimmerman (2-4) earned the win for Sioux Falls, going the distance in a seven-inning complete game. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out five.
Luke Boyd (1-7) took the loss for Winnipeg, surrendering two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Weston Lombard made his Goldeyes debut in relief, pitching two-thirds of an inning with one hit, one walk, and a strikeout. Rickey Ramírez pitched one-third of an inning in the seventh before the game was called.
The Goldeyes announced a number of transactions prior to Tuesday’s contest. Catcher Tripp Clark was acquired from the Kane County Cougars in exchange for a player to be named later. Right-hander Ramírez was obtained on loan from the Mexican League’s Piratas de Campeche. Catcher Braxton Turner was traded to the Boise Hawks of the Pioneer League for future considerations. Finally, right-handed pitcher Landon Leach was released.
The series continues Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Winnipeg will send right-hander Jesse Galindo (2-3, 4.66 ERA) to the mound against Sioux Falls left-hander
Cade Torgerson (3-3, 7.89 ERA) in game two of the three-game set.
