Goldeyes Bats Break Out Against Monarchs
WINNIPEG, MB – Right fielder Max Murphy had three hits and drove in two runs, while each of Winnipeg’s nine batters recorded at least one hit as the Goldeyes (48-40) defeated the Kansas City Monarchs 11-6 Wednesday evening at Blue Cross Park.
Kansas City (52-37) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Right fielder Tyler Gentry doubled to centre field before second baseman Austin Callahan hit a two-run home run to right to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
Winnipeg answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Catcher Raphaël Pelletier and Murphy singled before first baseman Roby Enríquez doubled to centre, scoring both runners to tie the game 2-2. Centre fielder Peyton Holt followed with a single to left that brought Enríquez home and put the Goldeyes ahead 3-2.
Shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder singled with one out in the third and designated hitter Noah Marcelo drove him in with a triple to centre, extending Winnipeg’s lead to 4-2.
Murphy doubled to begin the fourth and scored on Holt’s sacrifice fly to centre to make it 5-2.
The Monarchs pulled to within two runs in the fifth when catcher Brady Lindsly singled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on first baseman Luken Baker’s single to left.
The Goldeyes responded in the bottom half. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco doubled to left and scored when Marcelo followed with a double to left, restoring Winnipeg’s three-run advantage at 6-3.
Winnipeg added another run in the sixth. Holt singled and second baseman Adam Hall doubled before Bramasco lifted a sacrifice fly to centre that scored Holt and made it 7-3.
The Goldeyes broke the game open with three runs in the seventh. Marcelo, left fielder Keshawn Lynch, and Pelletier drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Murphy’s groundout scored Marcelo before Hall singled to centre to bring home Pelletier and Lynch, increasing the lead to 10-3.
Kansas City scored an unearned run in the eighth, but Winnipeg answered again when Lynch and Pelletier singled and Murphy drove in Lynch with a single to centre for an 11-4 advantage.
Third baseman J.D. Davis drove in two runs with a double to left in the ninth for the final 11-6 margin.
Right-hander Aidan Newton (W, 4-0) allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out one. Right-hander Arij Fransen followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. Left-hander Tasker Strobel worked two-thirds of a scoreless inning, yielding one hit and one walk. Right-hander Sage Ferguson allowed one unearned run without surrendering a hit in one inning, walking two and striking out one, while left-hander Mitchell Lambson allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two in the ninth.
Michael Mariot (L, 2-2) allowed six runs on ten hits over four innings for Kansas City. He struck out three without issuing a walk.
Murphy went three-for-five with a double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Marcelo was two-for-four with a double, a triple, and two RBIs, raising his season total to 86. His five triples are second on the Goldeyes. Hall, Pelletier, Didder, and Holt also had two hits apiece.
The four-game series concludes Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Cross Park, with Winnipeg leading two games to one. Left-hander Kevin Vaupel (4-5, 5.95 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Goldeyes, while Kansas City will counter with right-hander Thaddeus Ward (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
