Photo Credit: Ben Helland/Sioux Falls Canaries SIOUX FALLS, SD – Third baseman Cam Hassert hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday evening as the Sioux Falls Canaries (43-41) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 at Sioux Falls Stadium. Boxscore Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Second baseman Trevor Achenbach singled before catcher TJ Racherbaumer reached with a base hit, and centre fielder Joe Vos followed with a single to left field that brought Achenbach home. The Canaries extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Achenbach singled and Vos followed with a two-run home run to right field. Winnipeg (45-37) cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the fifth. Second baseman Peyton Holt scored on left fielder Adam Hall ’s single to left field, and third baseman Ramón Bramasco came home when centre fielder Noah Marcelo followed with another base hit to left. The Goldeyes moved in front in the seventh. Bramasco walked and stole second before Hall drew a walk. Marcelo then lined a two-run double to left field, scoring both runners and giving Winnipeg a 4-3 lead. Sioux Falls tied the game in the eighth when pinch-runner Chase Engelhard stole second base and scored on left fielder Anthony Hall’s single to left. Hassert ended the game with one out in the bottom of the ninth, hitting a solo home run to left field off right-hander Derrick Cherry (L, 1-3). Right-hander James Bradwell started for Winnipeg and allowed three runs on eight hits over four innings. He struck out five without issuing a walk. Right-hander Aidan Newton followed with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three, while right-hander Sage Ferguson was charged with the tying run. Left-hander Thomas Dorminy started for Sioux Falls and allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two. Right-hander Eric Waldichuk (W, 1-2) struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief. Marcelo finished two-for-four with a double and three runs batted in. He now leads the Goldeyes with 79 runs batted in and 106 hits.
