Goldeyes Drop Series Finale to RailCats
WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (7-9) saw their two-series win streak snapped with a 7-3 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (4-11) Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when Gary’s Jairus Richards broke through with an RBI single. Elvis Peralta followed with a two-run double, giving the RailCats a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the seventh before the Goldeyes responded in the bottom half. Andy Armstrong’s RBI double and Jake Guenther’s first home run of the season—a two-run shot—cut the deficit to 4-3.
However, Gary answered quickly. Peralta delivered again with a second two-run double in the eighth, and Olivier Basabe added an RBI single to cap the scoring at 7-3.
Goldeyes starter Tasker Strobel pitched five scoreless innings in a no-decision. Derrick Cherry (L, 1-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Spencer Adams (W, 1-1) earned the win for the RailCats, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts.
The Goldeyes also announced the transfer of pitcher Ben Kowalski to the Mexican League’s Dorados de Chihuahua.
Winnipeg hits the road Wednesday to begin a six-game trip, starting with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader Wednesday in Geneva, Illinois against the Kane County Cougars. Southpaw Mitchell Lambson (2-0, 3.70 ERA) is slated to start game one for the Goldeyes, while right-hander Chris Mazza (0-2, 3.17 ERA) will take the ball for Kane County.
