Goldeyes Drop Opener to Explorers
WINNIPEG, MB – The Sioux City Explorers (9-12) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes Friday evening at Blue Cross Park.
Winnipeg (9-11) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when designated hitter Max Murphy cracked a single to right that drove in left fielder Jiandido Tromp.
The Explorers scored five times in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Third baseman Zac Vooletich doubled to right field to bring in shortstop Elliot Good and centre fielder Austin Davis. Then, designated hitter Zane Denton hit a sacrifice fly to centre that plated Vooletich. Finally, second baseman Van De Brake homered to left field with first baseman Alberto Osuna aboard.
Sioux City would add three more in the fourth to make it 8-1. Davis lined a base hit to left field that brought right fielder Jackson Mayo and Good home, and left fielder Henry George came in on a sequence that eventually led to the Goldeyes turning a double play.
The visitors’ final two runs came in the sixth inning when Vooletich doubled to left scoring Davis. Vooletich then crossed the plate on Denton’s ground out to shortstop.
The Goldeyes attempted to rally in the closing innings. In the eighth, first baseman T.J. Schofield-Sam drove a three-run home run to left-centre field – his second in as many games – to make the score 10-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, Murphy came in on second baseman Keshawn Lynch’s sacrifice fly to centre that closed out the scoring at 10-5.
Zach Willeman (W, 1-2) started for the Explorers and went six innings. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out four and walked three.
Kevin Vaupel (L, 1-1) lasted just three innings for Winnipeg, allowing eight runs on eight hits. He also fanned four and issued three free passes. Eli Saul, Weston Lombard, Willian Suárez, and Quinn Waterhouse appeared in relief.
The series continues Saturday at 6:00 p.m. when the Goldeyes will send lefty Ryo Kohigashi (0-0, 4.05 ERA) to the mound. Sioux City will counter with Reed Butz (1-1, 5.75 ERA).
