Goldeyes Punch Postseason Ticket in Fargo
FARGO, ND – Left-hander Kevin Vaupel worked five strong innings as the Winnipeg Goldeyes (53-42) defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 6-2 Wednesday evening at Newman Outdoor Field to clinch a postseason berth.
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. Designated hitter Jiandido Tromp drew a walk and first baseman Roby Enríquez singled before third baseman Ramón Bramasco brought Tromp home with an infield single.
The Goldeyes doubled their lead in the fourth when shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder tripled to centre field and scored on a base hit by centre fielder Noah Marcelo.
Winnipeg made it 3-0 in the fifth. Tromp reached on an error by RedHawks shortstop Aidan Byrne and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring when Bramasco reached on a fielder's choice and Byrne committed a throwing error.
Fargo-Moorhead (49-45) pulled to within a run in the bottom half. Right fielder Jesús Lujano singled and catcher Juan Fernández doubled before first baseman José Sermo delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field.
The Goldeyes restored their three-run advantage in the eighth. Right fielder Max Murphy and left fielder Keshawn Lynch singled before Tromp drove both runners home with a double to right field that made it 5-2.
Second baseman Adam Hall tripled in the ninth and scored Winnipeg's final run on Marcelo's sacrifice fly to centre field.
Vaupel (5-5) allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Arij Fransen worked a scoreless sixth, walking one and striking out two. Eli Saul did not allow a hit in a scoreless seventh, walking one. Sage Ferguson kept Fargo-Moorhead off the scoreboard in the eighth, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one, and Derrick Cherry retired the side in order in the ninth.
