Goldeyes Comeback Stalls in One-Run Loss
WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-24) mounted a determined comeback but fell just short in a 7–6 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (24-25) Wednesday evening at Blue Cross Park.
The RedHawks jumped out to an early 7–0 lead, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning and two more in the third. Brendon Dadson opened the scoring with a solo home run to centre field. Later in the inning, Juan Fernández added a sacrifice fly to make it 2–0, and Dillon Thomas launched a three-run homer to extend the lead to 5–0.
In the third, Aiden Byrne delivered a two-run single that brought home Hunter Clanin and Derek Maiben, giving Fargo a 7–0 advantage.
Winnipeg’s offense began chipping away in the fourth inning. Gustavo Sosa drove in Matthew Warkentin with a sacrifice fly to right field to get the Goldeyes on the board. In the fifth, Ray-Patrick Didder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Ramón Bramasco and trim the deficit to 7–2.
The comeback continued in the sixth. Max Murphy lined an RBI single to right, scoring Braxton Turner, and Warkentin followed with a three-run home run to left-centre, cutting the RedHawks’ lead to just one run. However, Winnipeg was unable to push across the tying run in the final three innings.
Luke Boyd (L, 1-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits over three innings with three walks and one strikeout.
The Goldeyes’ bullpen was outstanding, combining for six shutout innings. Ryder Yakel, Trevor Brigden, Ben Onyshko, Landon Leach, and Tasker Strobel kept the game within reach, allowing just three hits while striking out nine.
Tyler Jandron (W, 3-3) earned the win for Fargo, giving up two runs on nine hits over five innings with one walk and eight strikeouts. Garrett Alexander (S, 3) recorded the final three outs for his third save of the season.
The series concludes Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. as the Goldeyes send Jesse Galindo (2-2, 4.33 ERA) to the mound against Orlando Rodríguez (1-4, 7.21 ERA) for the rubber match.
