Canaries Survive Late Push to Beat Goldeyes
WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-29) erased much of an early six-run deficit but ultimately dropped the series finale 12-7 to the Sioux Falls Canaries (31-24) Thursday evening at Blue Cross Park.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Matt Ruiz singled home two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Canaries extended the advantage to 6-0 in the fourth, with Scott Combs driving in Jordan Barth, followed by a three-run home run from Ruiz.
The Goldeyes responded with a five-run sixth inning. With Matthew Warkentin and Roby Enríquez on base, Max Murphy launched his 10th home run of the season to cut the lead in half. Andy Armstrong later brought home Tanner O’Tremba on a fielder’s choice, and Keshawn Lynch followed with an RBI double to make it a one-run game at 6-5.
Barth added to the Canaries' lead in the seventh with a two-run homer, but Winnipeg again answered in the bottom of the eighth. Ramón Bramasco drove in Gustavo Sosa with a double to the gap in left-centre, and Lynch notched his second RBI of the game to bring the Goldeyes back within one at 8-7.
However, Sioux Falls pulled away with a four-run ninth. Combs was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a sacrifice fly from Joe Vos, an RBI single by Ruiz, and another sac fly from Josh Rehwaldt to cap the scoring at 12-7.
Jesse Galindo (2-3) took the loss for Winnipeg, allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings with six walks and three strikeouts. The Goldeyes used four relievers, with Joe Jaco working 1.2 perfect innings and Tasker Strobel retiring the two batters he faced. Ben Onyshko was charged with four runs in 1.1 innings, and Landon Leach allowed two more in the ninth.
Cade Torgerson (3-3) picked up the win for Sioux Falls, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over five innings with four walks and five strikeouts.
The Kansas City Monarchs are the Goldeyes’ next opponent, playing what is essentially a doubleheader at Blue Cross Park Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. CDT. The first game is the resumption of a game suspended by rain in the bottom of the third inning June 8. It will be completed to at least nine innings, followed by the regularly scheduled game, which will be seven innings in length.
Mitchell Lambson (6-1, 4.17 ERA) will start game two for the Goldeyes, who will face fellow southpaw Josh Hendrickson (6-2, 3.74 ERA). Fans can join me, Trevor Curl, for all the action live on CJNU 93.7 FM and online at cjnu.ca, with the pregame show beginning at 5:00 p.m. The games will also be broadcast in French on Envol 91 FM with Yanick LaRoche handling the play-by-play.
