Saltdogs Win Extra-Inning Thriller at Haymarket Park
LINCOLN, NE – The Lincoln Saltdogs (2-5) edged the Winnipeg Goldeyes (3-6) in a thrilling 3-2 victory in 11 innings Saturday night at Haymarket Park.
Lincoln took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run from Rolando Espinosa. The Goldeyes struggled to break through offensively but finally tied the game in the ninth when Andy Armstrong’s one-out infield single scored Keshawn Lynch from third, sending the game to extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th, Winnipeg grabbed its first lead of the night in the top of the 11th. With Evan Alexander on to start the inning as the courtesy runner at second, a passed ball advanced him to third. Max Murphy then hit a grounder to shortstop Espinosa, and Alexander beat the throw home to make it 2-1 on a fielder’s choice.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Saltdogs answered. With Tasker Strobel on the mound and the bases loaded, Yusniel Diaz hit a grounder to third baseman Ramón Bramasco, who couldn’t field it cleanly, allowing Parker Stroh to score the tying run. One batter later, Espinosa delivered again with a line drive to right-centre, plating Danny Bautista Jr. to secure the 3-2 win.
On the mound for Winnipeg, Ryder Yakel made the start and delivered three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He was followed by Derrick Cherry, who turned in an impressive relief appearance with three shutout frames, surrendering only one hit while striking out two and walking one. Will Sierra added a scoreless inning of his own, striking out two batters while giving up one hit and a walk. Strobel (0-2) was charged with the loss despite a strong outing, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one intentional walk.
For Lincoln, starter Johnny Ray was dominant through five shutout innings, giving up just two hits while walking five and striking out four. Jacob Roberts (1-1) earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing the final two innings and allowing one unearned run.
The rubber match of the three-game series takes place Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CDT. Winnipeg will send right-hander Landen Bourassa (0-1, 6.17 ERA) to the mound, while Lincoln counters with left-hander Greg Loukiene (0-0, 6.75 ERA) in his second start of the season.
