Saltdogs Stun Goldeyes with Eighth-Inning Rally

LINCOLN, NE – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-38) dropped a 6-5 decision to the Lincoln Saltdogs (27-37) Saturday evening at Haymarket Park.

Leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Goldeyes saw the Saltdogs rally for four runs, handing Winnipeg its league-high 18th one-run loss of the season and extending the club’s losing streak to nine games.

 

Keshawn Lynch led off the third inning with a triple and came home on a Ray-Patrick Didder  fielder’s choice to give Winnipeg an early 1-0 lead.

 

Lincoln answered in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Battle hit a two-run home run to make it 2-1 Saltdogs.

 

The Goldeyes responded with a four-run seventh inning. Roby Enríquez tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single. Max Murphy then scored on a throwing error, giving Winnipeg a 3-2 lead. A wild pitch brought home Enríquez, and Didder capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2.

 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Saltdogs loaded the bases and scored their first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Spencer Henson followed with a three-run home run to left field, giving Lincoln a 6-5 lead.

 

The Goldeyes went in order in the top of the ninth.

 

James Bradwell took a no-decision for Winnipeg, allowing two runs on two hits over six innings, walking three, and striking out a season-high six batters. Ben Onyshko and Rickey Ramírez combined to pitch the eighth, with Ramírez (L, 0-1) taking the loss.

 

Jhon Vargas started for Lincoln and allowed one run on six hits over 4.1 innings. Dylan Beck allowed four runs over 1.1 innings of relief, while Matt Mullenbach (3-3) picked up the win. Connor Langrill (S, 3) pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save.

 

The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CDT. Luke Boyd (1-7, 5.12 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Goldeyes, while Greg Loukinen (5-4, 5.08 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Saltdogs.

Boxscore After the opening two innings were scoreless, the Goldeyes got on the board in the third when Ramón Bramasco scored on Tripp Clark ’s single up the middle. They would increase the lead to 2-0 a batter later on a groundout to shortstop off the bat of Matthew Warkentin that brought Jacob Robson home. The following frame, Winnipeg added three more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Gustavo Sosa hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Keshawn Lynch before Tanner O’Tremba scampered home on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0. Finally, Andy Armstrong came in on Bramasco’s double to left-centre field to increase the lead to five. Lincoln broke through in the fifth when Kyle Battle came home on a throwing error to reduce the deficit to 5-1. The Saltdogs would pull to within two in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run home down the right field line by Brody Fahr. However, the Goldeyes put the game out of reach with four runs in the top of the ninth. Armstrong singled and scored on Robson’s triple to right-centre field to make it 6-3. Robson sprinted home on Clark’s ground ball to third base, resulting in an RBI fielder’ choice which further extended the lead. Lynch then hit a two-run double to left-centre – his third hit of the day. Warkentin and Roby Enríquez scored on the play, which rounded out the scoring at 9-3 Winnipeg. Eight Goldeyes had at least one hit on the afternoon, with Lynch, Bramasco, and Robson enjoying multiple-hit days. Luke Boyd (W, 2-7) was impressive, giving up an unearned run on two hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked four. Zan Rose , Tasker Strobel , and Trevor Brigden each worked an inning out of the bullpen, with Rose allowing two runs in the seventh inning. Greg Loukinen (L, 5-5) started for Lincoln and surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits over six innings. With the American Association All-Star Game scheduled for Tuesday in Fargo, the Goldeyes are off until Thursday when they will take on the Chicago Dogs at 6:30 p.m. CDT at Blue Cross Park. The Goldeyes have now lost a league-high 17 one-run games this season. Boxscore Lincoln opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Rolando Espinosa lifted a deep drive to left that was caught by Roby Enríquez , who made a leaping grab to take away a potential grand slam. Brody Fahr scored on the sacrifice fly to give the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead. The Goldeyes responded in the second when Ray-Patrick Didder hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left that scored Matthew Warkentin and put Winnipeg ahead 2-1. In the third, Jacob Robson tripled and scored on a Tripp Clark single to extend the lead to 3-1. The Goldeyes made it 4-1 in the fourth when Enríquez singled and later came home on a base hit by Kevin García . Lincoln cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Danny Bautista Jr. drove in two runs with a shallow single to score Max Hewitt and Jack Cone. In the fifth, a passed ball allowed Fahr to score and tie the game at 4-4. Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the top of the 11th, when pinch-runner Andy Armstrong scored from third base on a passed ball to give Winnipeg a 5-4 lead. In the bottom half, the Saltdogs tied the game on a bases-loaded walk to Fahr and won it one batter later when Neyfy Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to centre field. Franny Cobos started for Lincoln and took a no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits over four innings with a walk and a strikeout. Dylan Castaneda followed with five shutout innings, surrendering just two hits while walking one and striking out three. Jacob Roberts worked two scoreless innings before Peyton Cariaco (W, 1-2) was credited with the win in the 11th. Derrick Cherry started for Winnipeg and gave up one earned run over three innings. Weston Lombard was first out of the Goldeyes’ bullpen and allowed three runs (two earned) over one inning on one hit, three walks, and a strikeout. SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries (36-25) erased a three-run deficit and defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-36) by a score of 4-3 Thursday evening at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Goldeyes have dropped seven straight contests. Boxscore Winnipeg opened the scoring in the opening frame on a two-out double down the right field line by Matthew Warkentin that drove in Ramón Bramasco and Roby Enríquez . The Goldeyes increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second when Jacob Robson brought Ray-Patrick Didder home with a single to left. It was all Sioux Falls from that point on, however. Jordan Barth led off the bottom of the same inning with a home run to left field, and Calvin Estrada tied the contest in the third with a two-run home run to right. A two-out single to left field by Trevor Achenbach in the sixth inning scored Estrada with the eventual winning run. Canaries’ starter Seth Miller (W, 2-5) worked six innings in earning the victory. He allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits, while striking out two and walking five batters. Kody Dalen, Ryan Richardson, and Charlie Hasty (S, 6) limited the Goldeyes to just two hits over the final three innings. Mitchell Lambson (L, 6-3) started for Winnipeg and surrendered four runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked three. It was Winnipeg’s sixth consecutive defeat. Boxscore Sioux Falls took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Trevor Achenbach launched a two-run homer to left field, scoring Jordan Barth to make it 2-0. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the fifth. With Matthew Warkentin at third base, Ray-Patrick Didder lined a single to left to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Barth added insurance for the Canaries with a solo home run to right, extending the lead to 3-1. Winnipeg mounted a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth when Max Murphy belted his 12th home run of the season the opposite way to pull the Goldeyes within one, but the rally fell short. Cade Torgerson (W, 4-3) earned the win for Sioux Falls, working six innings while allowing one run on six hits and striking out four. The Canaries bullpen combined for the final three innings. Will Levine tossed a clean seventh with a strikeout, Cole LaLonde allowed a hit in the eighth, and Charlie Hasty (S, 5) closed it out in the ninth despite surrendering Murphy’s homer. Jesse Galindo (2-4) took the loss for Winnipeg, going five innings and giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The Goldeyes bullpen covered the final three frames. Derrick Cherry worked 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. Boxscore The Canaries opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Mike Hart singled home Jabari Henry to make it 1-0. Sioux Falls added to their lead in the sixth as Matt Ruiz drove in Trevor Achenbach with an RBI single for the game’s final run. Storm clouds rolled in during the bottom of the seventh, bringing heavy rain that forced a 45-minute delay. After officials deemed the field unplayable with more rain on the way, the game was called after six-plus innings. Ryan Zimmerman (2-4) earned the win for Sioux Falls, going the distance in a seven-inning complete game. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Luke Boyd (1-7) took the loss for Winnipeg, surrendering two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Weston Lombard made his Goldeyes debut in relief, pitching two-thirds of an inning with one hit, one walk, and a strikeout. Rickey Ramírez pitched one-third of an inning in the seventh before the game was called. The Goldeyes announced a number of transactions prior to Tuesday’s contest. Catcher Tripp Clark was acquired from the Kane County Cougars in exchange for a player to be named later. Right-hander Ramírez was obtained on loan from the Mexican League’s Piratas de Campeche. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-33) came within a base hit of a comeback win in the bottom of the ninth, but the Kansas City Monarchs (37-21) held on for a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park, completing a three-game sweep. Boxscore The Monarchs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. John Nogowski singled home Ross Adolph to open the scoring, and Blake Rutherford added an RBI single to right to bring in Jaylyn Williams for a 2-0 advantage. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the third. With Andy Armstrong aboard, designated hitter Ramón Bramasco launched his fifth home run of the season into the trees beyond right field to tie the game 2-2. Kansas City reclaimed the lead in the fourth when Joshuan Sandoval singled home Josh Bissonette to make it 3-2. In the fifth, Winnipeg grabbed its first lead of the series. After Armstrong and Keshawn Lynch reached base, Jacob Robson lined a single through the right side. A wild throw home from first baseman Nogowski allowed Armstrong and Lynch to score, giving the Goldeyes a 4-3 lead. That lead was short-lived. In the top of the sixth, Álvaro González doubled down the right field line to score Rutherford from second, tying the game at 4-4. Moments later, Bissonette hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring González with what proved to be the game-winning run. Daniel Martínez (W, 4-4) earned the win for Kansas City, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out four. The Monarchs’ bullpen combined for four shutout innings, with Jeff Hakanson, Steffon Moore, Leam Mendez, and Hunter McMahon (S, 5) closing the door. Boxscore Kansas City opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Álvaro González reached base and scored on a Josh Bissonette sacrifice fly to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Alex McGarry launched a two-run home run to right field with González aboard to extend the advantage to 3-0. The Monarchs added two more runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Jaylyn Williams scored on a wild pitch before González grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought John Nogowski across the plate. The Goldeyes began chipping away at the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Tanner O’Tremba led off with a triple and scored on a Gustavo Sosa fielder’s choice to make it 5-1. An inning later, Ramón Bramasco hit his fourth home run of the season with a solo shot down the right field line to cut the lead to 5-2. WINNIPEG, MB – The Kansas City Monarchs (35-21) took both games from the Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-31) Friday evening at Blue Cross Park, winning the continuation of a suspended game 5-3 before edging out the home side 1-0 in the regularly scheduled contest. Boxscore – Game One Boxscore – Game Two Friday’s action began with the resumption of a game originally suspended due to rain June 8, with the Monarchs leading 2-1 after three innings. Kansas City wasted little time adding to their advantage in the top of the fourth. Jaylyn Williams and Josh Bissonette opened the inning with singles, setting the stage for an Alex McGarry RBI single to make it 3-1. Ross Adolph followed with a run-scoring single, and later in the frame, Jorge Bonifacio drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the Monarchs’ lead to 5-1. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the inning when Keshawn Lynch reached third and Max Murphy connected on his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field that cut the deficit to 5-3. However, that would be all the Goldeyes could muster. Luke Boyd (L, 1-6) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over three innings in his original June start. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-29) erased much of an early six-run deficit but ultimately dropped the series finale 12-7 to the Sioux Falls Canaries (31-24) Thursday evening at Blue Cross Park. Boxscore Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Matt Ruiz singled home two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Canaries extended the advantage to 6-0 in the fourth, with Scott Combs driving in Jordan Barth, followed by a three-run home run from Ruiz. The Goldeyes responded with a five-run sixth inning. With Matthew Warkentin and Roby Enríquez on base, Max Murphy launched his 10th home run of the season to cut the lead in half. Andy Armstrong later brought home Tanner O’Tremba on a fielder’s choice, and Keshawn Lynch followed with an RBI double to make it a one-run game at 6-5. Barth added to the Canaries' lead in the seventh with a two-run homer, but Winnipeg again answered in the bottom of the eighth. Ramón Bramasco drove in Gustavo Sosa with a double to the gap in left-centre, and Lynch notched his second RBI of the game to bring the Goldeyes back within one at 8-7. However, Sioux Falls pulled away with a four-run ninth. Combs was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a sacrifice fly from Joe Vos, an RBI single by Ruiz, and another sac fly from Josh Rehwaldt to cap the scoring at 12-7. Jesse Galindo (2-3) took the loss for Winnipeg, allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings with six walks and three strikeouts. The Goldeyes used four relievers, with Joe Jaco working 1.2 perfect innings and Tasker Strobel retiring the two batters he faced. Ben Onyshko was charged with four runs in 1.1 innings, and Landon Leach allowed two more in the ninth. Cade Torgerson (3-3) picked up the win for Sioux Falls, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over five innings with four walks and five strikeouts. The Kansas City Monarchs are the Goldeyes’ next opponent, playing what is essentially a doubleheader at Blue Cross Park Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. CDT. The first game is the resumption of a game suspended by rain in the bottom of the third inning June 8. It will be completed to at least nine innings, followed by the regularly scheduled game, which will be seven innings in length. Mitchell Lambson (6-1, 4.17 ERA) will start game two for the Goldeyes, who will face fellow southpaw Josh Hendrickson (6-2, 3.74 ERA).
