Saltdogs Avoid Sweep With One-Sided Victory

LINCOLN, NE – The Lincoln Saltdogs (20-22) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 13-2 at Haymarket Park Thursday evening.

With the win, the Saltdogs not only avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Goldeyes (18-25), but also halted Winnipeg’s season-high five-game winning streak.


Lincoln opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Yanio Perez blooped a single to centre field to bring home right fielder Connor Panas. The 1-0 lead was the Saltdogs’ first of the series.


In the bottom of the third inning, centre fielder Nick Anderson lined a single to centre field that scored Panas to make it 2-0 Lincoln.


The Saltogs erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. First, third baseman Will Kengor walked with the bases loaded, which forced in Panas. Then Perez hit a broken bat single to right-centre field to drive in shortstop Drew Devine and Anderson to and put Lincoln up 5-0. Second baseman Nate Samson made it 7-0 Saltdogs with a single to centre field that scored Kengor and Perez, before catcher Marshall Awtry made it 8-0 with another broken bat single to left-centre field that cashed in left fielder Zane Zurbrugg.


Lincoln scored five more times in the sixth. Bases-loaded walks to Zurbrugg and Samson forced in Kengor and Perez respectively. Then wild pitches allowed designated hitter Luke Roskam and Zurbrugg to score before finally Panas singled down the right field line to plate Samson and give the Saltdogs a 13-0 cushion.


Winnipeg finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when second baseman Brynn Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk that drove in right fielder Najee Gaskins. First baseman Chris Burgess then came in on a double play ball off the bat of centre fielder Tra Holmes to make the score Saltdogs 13 Goldeyes 2.


Starter John Bezdicek (3-2) earned the win for Lincoln. He allowed two unearned runs on five hits over six innings of work. He struck out six and walked a pair.

Despite the lopsided score, Walter Borkovich picked up his first save of the season by virtue of having worked the final three innings. He surrendered just one hit and struck out five.


Landen Bourassa (3-3) was charged with the loss. He gave up six runs – all earned – on seven hits in just four innings. He struck out four and walked four.


Winnipeg now travels to Kansas City, Kansas, where they will begin a three-game series against the Monarchs at Legends Field Friday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Joey Matulovich (1-4, 6.63 ERA) is expected to start for the Goldeyes, with Kansas City sending righty Cody Deason (4-1, 4.41 ERA) to the mound. The Goldeyes return home Friday, July 7 when the Milwaukee Milkmen visit Shaw Park.

KANSAS CITY, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the opening game of a three-game series with the Kansas City Monarchs (4-0) Tuesday at Legends Field by a score of 5-4. Box Score The Goldeyes (1-4) opened the scoring on the second pitch of the game with a home run by Jacob Robson that left the bat at 107 miles per hour and travelled 447 feet to deep left-centre field. Following a walk to Ray-Patrick Didder , Max Murphy hit a double to right-centre to drive in Didder from first to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Monarchs answered in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to left field by shortstop Josh Bissonette to cut the lead to 2-1. Kansas City took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run to left-centre off the bat of Robbie Glendinning that scored Isiah Gilliam and put the Monarchs ahead 3-2. The home side added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth on an fielder’s choice by Jhailyn Ortiz that brought Jorge Bonifacio in from third to make the score 4-2. One batter later, Jaylyn Williams hit a soft single up the middle scoring Gilliam to make it a 5-2 lead. The Goldeyes closed the gap to one run in the eighth inning on a Tanner O’Tremba two-run single scoring Robson from second and Murphy from first to cut the lead down to 5-4 and that would be the final score. The Goldeyes sent right-hander Landen Bourassa (L, 0-1) out for his second start of the year. He went 5.2 innings giving up seven hits, five runs (all earned), walked a batter and struck out a season high of seven. Patrick Pridgen (W, 1-0) got the start for the Monarchs. He lasted five innings, giving up three hits, two runs – both earned, walked two and struck out four in his 2025 season debut. Out of the bullpen, the Goldeyes used Ryder Yakel , who struck out the side in the seventh and tied a personal season high with four strikeouts. Rookie Ben Kowalski , signed earlier in the day, struck out two batters in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Monarchs threw four arms out of the bullpen. CLEBURNE, TX – The Cleburne Railroaders (3-1) hung on to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-5 at La Moderna Field Sunday evening. Box Score Cleburne opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a single to right field by right fielder Steven Rivas that drove in first baseman Kyle Martin. The Goldeyes (1-3) promptly tied the contest in their next at-bat when catcher Gustavo Sosa punched a ground ball through the left side of the infield to bring in right fielder Max Murphy and make the score 1-1. The game remained deadlocked until the top of the fifth inning when Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco smacked a double to the gap in right-centre field that scored centre fielder Jacob Robson all the way from first base. The Railroaders scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to move in front 4-2. First, shortstop Cooper Weiss hit a broken-bat single to right-centre field that brought in Rivas and designated hitter Anthony Brocato. Centre fielder Korry Howell then scampered home on a wild pitch to give Cleburne a two-run cushion. Two more runs came in for Cleburne in the seventh when Brocato doubled into the left field corner. Martin and left fielder Aaron Altherr scored to make it 6-2. Winnipeg got one back in the top of the eighth inning when Sosa drove in his second run of the contest with a single to left field past a diving Weiss that plated left fielder Evan Alexander . The Goldeyes rallied in the ninth, scoring twice with two out when designated hitter Tanner O’Tremba lined a single to left that drove in Robson and Murphy and made in 6-5 Cleburne. CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (1-2) dropped the third game of the series by a final score of 5-3 at La Moderna Field on Saturday night. Box Score The Cleburne Railroaders (2-1) fell into an early deficit when the Goldeyes veteran catcher Kevin Garcia collected his first hit of the 2025 season on a bleeder into shallow left-centre field scoring Max Murphy and Tanner O’ Tremba to a take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Cleburne starter Mike Shawaryn. Shawaryn pitched five innings giving up four hits, two runs that were earned walked a batter, and struck out three. Goldeyes starter Mitch Lambson in his 2025 season debut pitched five innings as well. Surrendering five hits, giving up two runs both earned, walking three, and striking out four. In the bottom of the second inning, the Railroaders got back within a run on an RBI single off the bat of Andres Sosa to get back within a run at 2-1. The score would stay the same until the bottom of the seventh inning. Austin Fairchild (0-1) came into pitch replacing Lambson after the fifth inning. Fairchild pitched an inning and two third walking three and striking out a batter. Ryder Yakel went came into pitch with runners on first and second. A base hit to Aaron Altherr (3) brought home Lamar Sparks and put runners at the corners and a 3-2 lead. A batter later a double to Kyle Martin (6) scoring Dustin Peterson and Altherr giving the Railroaders a 5-3 lead. Jamie Arias threw a scoreless .2 of an inning giving up a walk. He handed the ball off to Taylor Broadway (1-0) who earned the win facing five batters and striking out two in a 1.1. Zeke Wood held the game going an inning and surrendered two hits and struck out two. Kristian Scott earned the save striking out a batter in the ninth. CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (1-1) won their first game of the 2025 season Friday evening with a 6-4 decision over the Cleburne Railroaders at La Moderna Field. Box Score On what was another cooler spring evening in Texas, the Goldeyes fell behind the Railroaders (1-1) midway through the contest. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Dustin Peterson (3) singled off Goldeyes starter JJ Echevarría scoring Andrés Sosa from second base and giving Cleburne a 1-0 lead. In the same frame, Kyle Martin (2) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Cooper Weiss from third to take a 2-0 lead. Echevarría would not finish the fifth, and lasted 4.2 innings during which he surrendered six hits, two runs (both earned), and three walks. He struck out four. Winnipeg would answer in the top of the sixth. Railroaders starter Blair Henley loaded the bases and gave way to reliever Austin Faith, who walked Evan Alexander (1) as the Goldeyes reduced the deficit to 2-1. Tanner O’ Tremba stepped to the plate with one out and found the turf in left-centre field scoring Max Murphy and Matthew Warkentin to take the lead. Alexander would hustle his way around the bases scoring from first to put the Goldeyes up 4-2. The Goldeyes would add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning on two-run double by Ray-Patrick Didder scoring Jacob Robson and Ramón Bramasco to put the Goldeyes up 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh inning Derrick Cherry (W, 1-0) allowed a two-run home run to Martin (5) to get the Railroaders back within striking distance. Cherry went 1.2 innings and gave up just two hits. Coming out of retirement for Winnipeg, former Detroit Tigers pitcher Zac Reininger came in to put out the fire and earn a hold going 1.2 innings without giving up a baserunner and striking out three. The Goldeyes called on veteran southpaw Tasker Strobel (S, 1) to work a scoreless ninth inning. Blair Henley (L, 0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season. CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes opened the 2025 American Association season with a 6-5, ten-inning defeat at the hands of the Cleburne Railroaders (1-0) Thursday at La Moderna Field. Box Score On an overcast and breezy evening, Cleburne edged the Goldeyes (0-1) in a tight battle that saw both teams going back-and-forth from the second inning on. Landen Bourassa took the Opening Day nod for the first time since pitching for the University of San Francisco and fired a six-inning quality start, allowing three runs on five hits, walking a batter and striking out four. Gabe Klobosits threw 5.1 innings also giving up three runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out three for the Railroaders. Cleburne would cash in their first runs of the night in the bottom of the second on a Lamar Sparks (2) two-run home run that cut through the 11 mile per hour wind and scored Steven Rivas to make the game 2-0. Winnipeg would answer back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half with a Mathew Warkentin (1) single scoring Ramón Bramasco from second to make the game 2-1. The Railroaders got their two-run lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning on the first of Dustin Peterson’s (1) two doubles on the night. With Shed Long on first base, Peterson hooked a skipping line drive past a diving Bramasco and Long scored with ease to make it 3-1. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the sixth inning when Max Murphy (2) came up to the dish with Ray-Patrick Didder aboard at second. Down two strikes, Murphy went the opposite way for his first home run of the 2025 season – a line drive that traveled 353 feet and left the bat at 100 mph. This chased Klobosits from the game and brought in Taylor Broadway who worked a scoreless 1.2 innings. Murphy’s home run was his 88th as a member of the Goldeyes, leaving him two away from tying Josh Mazzola for second most round trippers in a Winnipeg uniform. Regie Abercrombie is the Goldeyes’ all-time leader with 94. Ryder Yakel would make his first appearance in the bottom of the seventh inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Korry Howell reached on a walk and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Cooper Weiss. Peterson hit his second double of the game to put runners on second and third with two out. Former Goldeyes first baseman Kyle Martin hit a 24-foot swinging bunt down the third base line and on a bang-bang play at first was called safe. Wiess scored, giving Cleburne the lead back at 4-3. The Goldeyes responded again in the top of the eighth on a Max Murphy (3) sacrifice fly scoring Bramasco from third to tie the game at 4-4. The run would be charged to Bryce Bronnin who walked Bramasco to lead off the frame. Zeke Wood came in a worked a scoreless inning and a third to take it to the bottom of the ninth still tied. In his professional debut, Will Sierra came in to face the ninth batter and the top hitters in the Railroaders lineup. After a hit-by-pitch to the first batter he saw, he left the winning run in scoring position to force extra innings. In the top of the tenth inning, the Goldeyes courtesy runner was Kevin García who was lifted for Gustavo Sosa to run at second base. Kristian Scott (W, 1-0) would come into pitch for Cleburne for the start of extra innings. Andy Armstrong put down a sacrifice bunt to move the go-ahead runner to third. A wild pitch with two outs brought home the run to give the Goldeyes their first lead of the night at 5-4. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Trevor Brigden (L, 0-1) came into pitch, inheriting Martin at second. With Aaron Altherr at the plate, the former big league hammered a slider into the left-centre field gap to give the Opening Day victory to the home crowd. KANSAS CITY, KS – The Kansas City Monarchs (2-0) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-2 in a preseason contest at Legends Field Tuesday afternoon. The game was called after the top of the eighth inning to prevent pitchers from exceeding their pitch counts. The Goldeyes (1-4) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third frame. First Jacob Robson brought home Andy Armstrong with a one-out single to right field, then Kevin García scored on a Max Murphy base hit to left. With Winnipeg rallying, the inning came to an early end owing to Kansas City starter Patrick Pridgen having thrown his allotment of pitches for the day. The Monarchs got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning Jesse Galindo – who started for the Goldeyes – uncorked a wild pitch allowing Jaylyn Williams to scamper home. The home side took the lead in the sixth on a two-run single to left-centre field by Robbie Glendinning that drove in Ross Adolph and Jorge Bonifacio, giving Kansas City a 3-2 edge. They would add two more in the bottom of the seventh when Álvaro González singled to centre plating Williams and Bonifacio drove in Adolph with a single to left field that made the score 5-2 Monarchs. KANSAS CITY, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the first of a two-game preseason set to the Kansas City Monarchs at Legends Field by a score of 6-1 Monday evening. A warm spring evening mixed with the smell of new artificial turf was the right mixture for Kansas City’s offense. The Monarchs struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After Goldeyes starter Landon Leach walked the first two batters, former big leaguer Jorge Bonifacio blooped a shallow single into centre field to score Ross Adolf from third base to make it 1-0. Another walk would load the bases to set up a grand slam home run off the bat of third baseman Robbie Glendinning that give the Monarchs a 5-0 advantage. The inning would end due to Leach’s pitch count running high in the opening frame. The Goldeyes answered in the top of the second. With two out and Evan Alexander on, having reached with a bunt single, Jake Guenther continued his hot spring with an opposite field double that cut the deficit to 5-1. That score held until the bottom of the fourth inning when, after a leadoff double by Isiah Gilliam and ground ball that moved him to third base with two away, Lázaro Armenteros singled to left field to bring the runner home. The Monarchs regained their five-run cushion and never looked back. The Goldeyes had multiple threats with runners in scoring position however, all were with two out and they couldn’t find the extra hit needed to score the runs. SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 in preseason action at Sioux Falls Stadium late Saturday afternoon. A bright spring day saw the Goldeyes offense put up nine hits in the contest compared to the ten by the Canaries, who cashed in on their opportunities late in the game In the top of the first inning, after a leadoff double by Ramón Bramasco , Jacob Robson sent a towering home run to the opposite field to give the Goldeyes a 2-0 lead. Landen Bourassa started for the Fish. After a tidy bottom of the first, Hunter Clanin hit a twoout solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Winnipeg lead in half at 2-1. In the top of the fourth inning, the Goldeyes would strike for a pair of runs with a RBI double by Tanner O’ Tremba , and a fielders’ choice by Jake Guenther giving the visitors a 4-1 lead. The Canaries would answer right back in the bottom of the frame with their second solo home run of the game, this time hit by Josh Rehwaldt, to cut the lead to 4-2. After scoreless fifth and sixth innings for the Goldeyes, the Canaries scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run, game tying double off the bat of Jabari Henry would end the rest of the scoring threat after Goldeyes’ pitcher Derrick Cherry hit his pitch limit for the frame. Sioux Falls would take the lead in the bottom of the seventh off a tricky infield ground ball hit by Jordan Barth thatscored Peter Zimmerman from third to give the Canaries the deciding run and a 5-4 lead. Two batters later, Andy Armstrong doubled to the opposite field and pushed two more runs across to give the Goldeyes a 4-1 lead. Sioux Falls struck back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Ernny Ordoñez to cut the deficit to 4-2. Three batters later, Hunter Clanin on the first pitch, hit a two-run double to knot it at 4-4. In the top of the seventh inning, the Goldeyes took the lead back thanks to Evan Alexander’s second home run of the spring. A moonshot three-run home run into the Sioux Falls night gave the Goldeyes a 7-4 lead and they would not surrender anything past that point. The Goldeyes play one more time in Sioux Falls at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon from Sioux Falls Stadium to close the two-game series. FARGO, ND – After the Fargo-Moorhead area experienced heavy rain overnight, Thursday's American Association preseason game between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, scheduled for 11:00 a.m., has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at Newman Outdoor Field. It was to have been the second of two games between the two clubs, with the RedHawks having taken Wednesday's contest by a 6-4 score. Winnipeg will practice at an indoor facility in Fargo before heading to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for two games against the Canaries Friday and Saturday. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Trevor Curl will be live on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 6:50.
