RedHawks’ Big Second Inning Sinks Goldeyes
WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (27-43) wrapped up their six-game homestand Wednesday evening with a 10-4 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-32) at Blue Cross Park.
Fargo-Moorhead wasted no time getting on the board, as Lamar Sparks homered to left field on the second pitch of the game. Three batters later, Brendon Dadson hit a solo shot to make it 2-0.
The RedHawks broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning. Michael Hallquist and Nicholas Northcut scored on a fielding error by Goldeyes third baseman Ramón Bramasco, and Hunter Clanin crossed on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-0. José Sermo then lined an RBI single to right, and Dadson followed with his second homer of the night – a three-run blast that brought in Sermo and Dillon Thomas – to make it 9-0.
The Goldeyes got on the board in the bottom of the second when Matthew Warkentin scored on an Andy Armstrong double-play ball.
Fargo-Moorhead added one more in the third when Sermo doubled home Sparks to restore their nine-run lead.
Roby Enríquez cut into the deficit in the sixth with a two-run double to right, scoring Warkentin and Keshawn Lynch to make it 10-3.
In the eighth, Jacob Robson launched his ninth home run of the season over the left-field wall, pulling Winnipeg to within six runs, but that was as close as they would get.
Kolby Kiser (W, 3-3) tossed six innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Naswell Paulino pitched one inning, giving up a run on two hits with two strikeouts. Tyler Jeans closed it out with two scoreless frames, allowing two hits and striking out two.
For the Goldeyes, Mitchell Lambson (L, 7-4) took the loss, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. Derrick Cherry provided 1.1 innings of relief, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out one. Zan Rose worked two scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts, and Weston Lombard pitched the ninth, allowing two hits and striking out two.
The Goldeyes departed for Franklin, Wisconsin after the game, where they will meet the Milwaukee Milkmen Friday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Winnipeg has not announced their starter for the opener of the three-game series, while Milwaukee is expected to send right-hander Chase Gearing (3-2, 6.58 ERA) to the mound.
