KANSAS CITY, KS – John Nogowski’s sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning gave the Kansas City Monarchs (54-36) a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-52) at Legends Field Wednesday evening.
The defeat was the Goldeyes’ league-leading 23rd one-run loss of the season and the seventh time in nine tries they have fallen in extra innings.
Kansas City opened the scoring in their first at-bat when third baseman Robbie Glendinning tripled to left-centre field, bringing Isiah Gilliam in from first base. However, Winnipeg quickly tied it in the top of the second on a single to left by third baseman Kevin García that drove in Roby Enríquez.
The Goldeyes took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Enríquez’s base hit to right-centre brought second baseman Keshawn Lynch home, but the Monarchs evened the score in the fifth when Gilliam doubled to right field plating catcher Andrés Noriega.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the 11th inning. Courtesy runner Jacob Robson scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Miles Simington to give Winnipeg a 3-2 advantage. Kansas City further extended the game in the bottom of the inning though. Jorge Bonifacio crossed the plate on a bloop single to centre off the bat of Nogowski that evened the score at 3-3.
Ben Kowalski started for the Goldeyes and went five innings. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four. Derrick Cherry, Ben Onyshko, Ryder Yakel, Henry Omaña, Tasker Strobel, and Trevor Brigden (L, 2-5) all appeared out of the bullpen for Winnipeg. Combined, they surrendered only three hits and no earned runs over the final eight frames.
Starter Grant Gambrell worked 3.2 innings for the Monarchs, giving up two runs on five hits. He fanned three and walked one batter. Kansas City’s relievers yielded only three hits over the remainder of the contest. Jeff Hakanson (W, 5-1) kept the Goldeyes off the board in the 13th, giving up a walk.
After a long trek home to Winnipeg, the Goldeyes return home to Blue Cross Park Friday, when they will open a weekend series with the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:00 p.m. CDT.
