Goldeyes Dominate Lincoln in Series Finale

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes’ (38-54) offence exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to a 9-0 shutout win over the Lincoln Saltdogs (36-56) Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park.

The Goldeyes sent 15 batters to the plate in the decisive frame. Max Murphy opened the scoring with a single to centre, and Miles Simington followed with an infield hit that plated Ramón Bramasco. Tanner O’Tremba stretched the lead to 4-0 with a two-run single to right, before Kevin García drove home two more with a liner to centre. Jacob Robson added an RBI single, Murphy notched his second run-scoring hit of the inning, and Simington capped the outburst by drawing a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-0.

 

On the mound, Luke Boyd (W, 5-9) was dominant, tossing seven shutout innings while scattering four hits, walking two, and striking out seven. Ryder Yakel finished off the final two frames, allowing just one hit and fanning a pair.

 

Lincoln reliever David Shaw (L, 1-3) took the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning.

 

The Goldeyes now head out for their final road trip of the season, opening a three-game series Tuesday at 7:02 p.m. CDT at Newman Outdoor Field against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Landen Bourassa (5-5, 4.18 ERA) is scheduled to start for Winnipeg opposite right-hander Kyle Crigger (7-4, 3.29 ERA).

Boxscore The Goldeyes jumped out early in the top of the second inning. Miles Simington and Matthew Warkentin drew back-to-back walks to set the table, before Keshawn Lynch lined a single to right to make it 1-0. Ray-Patrick Didder followed with a sacrifice fly to score Warkentin, and Kevin García capped the inning with an opposite-field single to plate Lynch for a 3-0 lead. In the fifth, Simington doubled into the right-centre field gap to score Max Murphy and extend the lead to 4-0. Fargo-Moorhead got on the board in the home half on a safety squeeze by Aiden Byrne that brought in Michael Hallquist, cutting the deficit to 4-1. Winnipeg answered quickly with another three-run frame in the sixth. With Roby Enríquez on first, Lynch ripped a single to right-centre that scored Enríquez all the way from first base. García later notched his second RBI of the night with a base hit to right, and Jacob Robson added an RBI single to stretch the advantage to 7-1. The RedHawks picked up a pair of runs late, as José Sermo launched a solo home run in the sixth and Dillon Thomas singled home Byrne in the seventh, but the Goldeyes’ bullpen shut the door the rest of the way to secure the win. Boxscore Lincoln opened the scoring in the first on a Neyfy Castillo RBI single before breaking out for four runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBIs from Danny Bautista Jr., Mikey Kane, and Rolando Espinosa, to build a 5-0 lead. Jack Cone added an RBI single in the third to make it 6-0. The Goldeyes responded in the fifth when Miles Simington tripled home Ramón Bramasco and Max Murphy , cutting the deficit to 6-2, but that was as close as Winnipeg would get. Tasker Strobel (L, 3-5) was tagged for five runs in 1.2 innings, while Derrick Cherry struck out seven over 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just an unearned run. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-53) could not overcome a seven-run fifth inning outburst by the Lincoln Saltdogs (35-55) and dropped the opener of a three-game series 10-5 Friday evening at Blue Cross Park. Boxscore Winnipeg opened the scoring in the first inning. With Ramón Bramasco on third, Miles Simington bounced into a fielder’s choice to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead. Lincoln answered in the second. Rolando Espinosa belted his first of two home runs on the night, a two-run shot that scored Mikey Kane and put the Saltdogs ahead 2-1. Later in the inning, Jake Cone singled home Griffin Everitt to extend the lead to 3-1. The Goldeyes trimmed the deficit in the third when Max Murphy singled up the middle to score Jacob Robson , making it 3-2. The Saltdogs broke the game wide open in the fifth with a seven-run inning. Espinosa went deep again, while Brody Fahr, Neyfy Castillo, and Kyle Battle – with a two-run homer – all drove in runs to stretch the lead to 10-2. Winnipeg answered in the bottom of the inning as Matthew Warkentin launched his 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot that also brought home Murphy. Boxscore The defeat was the Goldeyes’ league-leading 23rd one-run loss of the season and the seventh time in nine tries they have fallen in extra innings. Kansas City opened the scoring in their first at-bat when third baseman Robbie Glendinning tripled to left-centre field, bringing Isiah Gilliam in from first base. However, Winnipeg quickly tied it in the top of the second on a single to left by third baseman Kevin García that drove in Roby Enríquez . The Goldeyes took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Enríquez’s base hit to right-centre brought second baseman Keshawn Lynch home, but the Monarchs evened the score in the fifth when Gilliam doubled to right field plating catcher Andrés Noriega. The game remained deadlocked until the top of the 11th inning. Courtesy runner Jacob Robson scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Miles Simington to give Winnipeg a 3-2 advantage. Robbie Glendinning extended the advantage an inning later with a three-run shot to left field, making it 5-0. The Monarchs continued to add on late, as Jorge Bonifacio delivered a solo home run in the seventh before Kansas City broke the game open with a five-run eighth. RBIs from Andrés Noriega, Micah Pries, Bonifacio, Gilliam, and Glendinning rounded out the 11-0 final. WINNIPEG, MB – Winnipeg Goldeyes centre fielder Jacob Robson has been named Carbliss American Association Batter of the Week for the period ending August 17, the league announced Monday. Robson hit .381 over six games, with two home runs, five extra-base hits, four runs batted in, and eight runs scored. The Windsor, Ontario native is batting .263 on the season, with 13 four baggers, and 46 RBIs. He leads the Goldeyes with 20 doubles, and 27 stolen bases, and is tied for the club lead with four triples. The 30-year-old appeared in four games for the Detroit Tigers in August 2021 and was a member of the Canadian National Team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier. Robson was first selected by the San Diego Padres in the 30th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball June Draft out of Vincent Massey Secondary School (Windsor, Ontario). He chose to attend college and was subsequently chosen by the Tigers in the 8th round in 2016 out of Mississippi State University (Mississippi State, Mississippi). In 552 games in the affiliated minor leagues – including 300 at the Class-AAA level – Robson compiled a .283 average, with 34 home runs, 210 RBIs, and 111 steals. He has also played several seasons in the Australian Baseball League. Robson is the fourth member of the Goldeyes to win a weekly award this season, joining James Bradwell (August 3) and Mitchell Lambson (June 15), who garnered Pitcher of the Week honours, and Matthew Warkentin , who was named Batter of the Week July 6. Boxscore After the first three Sioux City batters of the ballgame reached safely via base hits, designated hitter D’Shawn Knowles singled to right field, driving in Austin Davis. Henry George would score on a subsequent throwing error to make it 2-0 Explorers. Right fielder Zac Vooletich then came home on another single to right off the bat of Joshua Day before Knowles stole home to extend the lead to 4-0. The Goldeyes got on the board in the top of the third, cutting the deficit to 4-1 on Max Murphy ’s sacrifice fly to right field that brought in catcher Kevin García , but Sioux City got that run back in the fourth when centre fielder Davis drove in Abdiel Layer with a single to left. The loss evens the three-game weekend set at a game apiece. Boxscore Winnipeg opened the scoring in the fourth inning. With Max Murphy and Miles Simington aboard, Matthew Warkentin doubled to right field to plate the game’s first run. Moments later, Rob Emery grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought in Simington for a 2-0 lead. Sioux City answered in the bottom half when Torin Montgomery drilled a three-run homer to left, putting the Explorers in front 3-2. The Goldeyes quickly responded in the fifth. Keshawn Lynch led off with a single and came around to score on a Ray-Patrick Didder double. Photo Credit: John Colavita/Sioux City Explorers SIOUX CITY, IA – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-47) opened a six-game road trip on a winning note Friday evening, defeating the league-leading Sioux City Explorers (54-31) 8-3 at Lewis & Clark Park. Boxscore The Goldeyes struck first in the opening inning when Ramón Bramasco drove in Jacob Robson with a single up the middle. Winnipeg extended its lead in the second, sending nine batters to the plate and pushing across three more runs. Matthew Warkentin launched a one-out solo home run, and Bramasco later delivered a two-run single to make it 4-0. Robson added to the advantage in the fourth with an opposite-field solo shot for a 5-0 lead. Sioux City answered in the fifth with an RBI single from Joshua Day, but Winnipeg quickly responded in the sixth as Max Murphy tripled home Robson to restore a five-run cushion at 6-1. The Explorers chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh, including a solo homer by Day, to close to within 6-3. The Goldeyes put the game out of reach in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Miles Simington lined a two-run single to right, scoring Ray-Patrick Didder and Kevin García to make it 8-3. Winnipeg starter Ben Kowalski (W, 2-0) earned the win, allowing just one run over five innings on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Derrick Cherry , Henry Omaña , Trevor Brigden , and Ben Onyshko each pitched an inning out of the bullpen for the Goldeyes. Peniel Otaño (L, 1-7) started and took the loss, giving up six runs on 11 hits in six innings. The series continues Saturday at 6:05 p.m. as Winnipeg sends southpaw Mitchell Lambson (8-4, 4.43 ERA) to the mound against Sioux City right-hander Ángel Macuare (2-1, 2.53 ERA).
