WINNIPEG, MB – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (11-15) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 10-2 at Newman Outdoor Field Friday evening.
Winnipeg (11-15) took an early 1-0 lead when third baseman Ramón Bramasco scored on a throwing error on what should have been a routine force play at home in the top of the first inning.
The RedHawks answered right back in their half of the frame however, with catcher Juan Fernández hitting a two-run home run to right field to make the score 2-1.
Fargo-Moorhead added two more in the third to extend their lead to 4-1. Second baseman Colby Wilkerson doubled to left field to score Fernández and designated hitter Tripp Clark.
The Goldeyes scored their second and final run in the top of the fourth inning on a single up the middle by catcher Raphaël Pelletier that drove in shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder.
The RedHawks added two more in the bottom of the same inning when third baseman Brian Fuentes came home on a fielding error and shortstop Aidan Byrne crossed the plate on Fernández’s fielder’s choice that made the score 6-2.
In the fifth, Clark hit a one-out, solo home run to centre field to give Fargo-Moorhead a five-run lead, and first baseman José Sermo’s base hit to right in the sixth inning drove in pinch runner Andy Nelson to make it 8-2.
The final two runs of the ballgame came in the seventh when Nelson singled to right field to plate left fielder Jairus Richards, and Byrne came in on a Fernández ground out.
Both starters figured in the decisions. The RedHawks’ Kyle Crigger (W, 2-3) allowed two runs – one earned – on eight hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked five.
For Winnipeg, Kevin Vaupel (L, 1-2) surrendered seven runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits in five innings of work. Vaupel fanned two and walked a pair. James Colyer, fresh off the Inactive List, and Weston Lombard appeared in relief.
The four-game series at Newman Outdoor Field continues Saturday at 6:00 p.m. with southpaw Ryo Kohigashi (0-0, 3.12 ERA) scheduled to start for Winnipeg, while Fargo-Moorhead will counter with fellow lefty Patrick Wicklander (1-1, 5.81 ERA).
