Goldeyes Hang On to Defeat Monarchs

KANSAS CITY, KS – Winnipeg's (30-44) snapping of a four-game losing streak was not easy as the Goldeyes defeated the Kansas City Monarchs (42-30) 7-5 on Saturday night at Legends Field.

The Goldeyes led by that score going to the bottom of the ninth inning with closer Samuel Adames (11) notching the first two outs. However, three straight Monarchs reached which gave them a chance to win. However, with a full-count, Monarchs first baseman Brian O'Grady popped out in foul territory to Goldeyes catcher Chris Burgess who secured the ball and win near the Kansas City first base dugout.


It was Winnipeg's second win against the Monarchs this year as Kansas City leads the series 9-2.


Winnipeg jumped on the board in the first on a solo homer by right fielder Max Murphy (21) adding to his league high. He has 63 RBI's--third in the league. The hit snapped a 1-17 drought.


Kansas City tied the game in the bottom of the first but Winnipeg scored three times in the second. Third baseman Dayson Croes and shortstop Andy Armstrong each had two-out run-producing hits. Croes had an infield single while Armstrong a two-run single to centre. Croes has four straight multi-hit games while Armstrong has three multi-hit games in this series.


Burgess (3) in the third inning added to the lead making it 6-1 with a two-run round-tripper to left field. It was his second homer of the series. All nine Goldeyes in the lineup reached base safely while eight had hits.


Kansas City scored three times in the fifth with the big hit a two-run double by O'Grady and that made it 6-4 Winnipeg. Windsor, Ontario product, Monarchs centre fielder Jacob Robson (8) added a homer in the eighth.


Landen Bourassa (7-5) won his third straight start for the Goldeyes. The Lethbridge native worked five innings, allowed nine hits, four runs (all earned) while walking one and fanning three. Adames worked two innings and struck out two for the save.


Monarchs starter Zach Matson (4-2) was the losing pitcher, surrendering six runs (five earned) in five innings. He allowed both Goldeyes homers.


The final game of this six-game set is on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City with a 1:00 first pitch. Left-hander Tyler Jandron (1-6) will be the "opener" for Winnipeg with Luis Ramirez (5-5) likely being the next pitcher beginning in the third inning. Kansas City will counter with left-hander Dalton Moats (4-3).


The Goldeyes return home Tuesday, August 8 at 6:30 p.m. when the Lincoln Saltdogs visit Shaw Park to open what will be a six-game homestand.

Croes is 8-21 in the series with five RBIs. His average is third in the American Association at .348. His RBI single in the sixth was his 100th hit this season which is second most in the AA.


Reliever Chas Cywin pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts. In his last 22 innings he's issued two earned runs--0.82 ERA during that time.


At 3:18 in duration, it was the longest nine-inning game of the season for Winnipeg.

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-46) opened their three-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders (38-43) with a 2-0 shutout win Tuesday evening at Blue Cross Park. The victory marks Winnipeg’s third in a row. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (36-46) combined dominant pitching with a power surge at the plate to claim a 7-2 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs (31-49) Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park, securing the three-game series win. Boxscore Winnipeg struck early in the bottom of the second inning. Matthew Warkentin launched his 12th home run of the season over the right-field wall, and moments later, Keshawn Lynch delivered a two-run blast to left with Tripp Clark aboard to make it 3-0. The lead grew in the fourth when Roby Enríquez doubled down the left-field line to score Ramón Bramasco . In the fifth, Jacob Robson drove a two-run double over the left fielder’s head with Clark and Kevin García on base, before Bramasco followed with an RBI single to centre to push the advantage to 7-0. Lincoln broke through in the sixth with an RBI infield single from Brody Fahr, and added a second run in the ninth when Gustavo Sosa singled to right to score Drew DeVine. Mitchell Lambson (W, 8-4) was outstanding, allowing just one unearned run over 7.2 innings while striking out a season-high 10 batters. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (33-46) came out on top in an offensive slugfest Saturday evening, holding off the Lincoln Saltdogs (31-48) for an 8-7 victory at Blue Cross Park. Boxscore Lincoln opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single from Spencer Henson, and doubled their lead in the second when Danny Bautista Jr. drove home Rolando Espinosa. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the second when Ray-Patrick Didder launched a three-run homer over the left-field fence onto Waterfront Drive, giving Winnipeg a 3-2 advantage. The Saltdogs tied the game in the fifth before Winnipeg surged ahead again. With the bases loaded, Matthew Warkentin delivered a bases-clearing triple to right-centre, and Tanner O’Tremba followed with an RBI single to make it 7-3. Lincoln closed the gap with two runs in the seventh, but the Goldeyes regained a three-run cushion when Keshawn Lynch scored from third on an overthrow during a steal attempt. Henson’s fourth RBI of the game in the eighth cut the Winnipeg lead to 8-7, but Ryder Yakel (S, 5) shut the door with a six-out save to preserve the win. Boxscore Lincoln took an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings before Danny Bautista Jr. hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0. Winnipeg responded in the bottom of the second when Jacob Robson drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Matthew Warkentin . Robson later added an RBI single in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Goldeyes moved in front in the sixth inning. With two outs, Ray-Patrick Didder doubled and scored on Tanner O’Tremba ’s single. In the top of the first, Ramón Bramasco reached base ahead of Jacob Robson , who launched his 11th home run of the season over the right field wall to open a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Bramasco reached on a throwing error and later scored on Robson’s third RBI of the evening, giving the Goldeyes a 4-0 cushion. Winnipeg’s pitching staff handled the rest. Boxscore Jordan Barth delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the ninth, driving a double off the left field wall to bring home Matt Ruíz and send the Canaries faithful home happy. Winnipeg opened the scoring in the third when Tanner O’Tremba crossed the plate on a fielding error by Canaries left fielder Mike Hart. But Sioux Falls responded in the fourth as Peter Zimmerman’s fielder’s choice scored Josh Rehwaldt, and Trevor Achenbach added an RBI single to give the home side a 2-1 lead. The Goldeyes regained control in the fifth. Ramón Bramasco ripped a two-out double to score O’Tremba, then came around himself on a single to left by Max Murphy , giving Winnipeg a 3-2 edge. That lead was short-lived, though, as Calvin Estrada launched a two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole in the bottom of the inning to put Sioux Falls ahead 4-3. The see-saw battle continued in the eighth, with Kevin García lofting a single to right that scored Roby Enríquez and tied the game 4-4. But in the ninth, with one out and Ruíz in scoring position, Barth’s deep drive sealed it for the Canaries. Veteran southpaw Mitchell Lambson got the start for Winnipeg and went six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out four. Reliever Trevor Brigden (L, 2-3) took the loss after surrendering the game-winning hit in the ninth.  Cole LaLonde started for Sioux Falls, giving up just one unearned run over four innings. SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (31-43) opened a four-game series in dominant fashion Monday, posting a 13-4 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries (42-33) at Sioux Falls Stadium. Boxscore For the first time in four games, the Goldeyes found themselves trailing early after a bases-loaded walk to Mike Hart in the bottom of the first scored Jabari Henry to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. The Goldeyes quickly responded in the top of the second. Matthew Warkentin , Kevin García , and Ray-Patrick Didder loaded the bases before Tanner O’Tremba doubled down the right field line, scoring Warkentin and García to take a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Ramón Bramasco ripped a two-run single to right-centre that brought home Didder and O’Tremba, extending the lead to 4-1. Sioux Falls answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run from Henry to make it 4-3. In the top of the third, Didder doubled to right-centre to score Warkentin from second, giving the Goldeyes a 5-3 advantage. The Canaries made one final push with a solo home run from Jordan Barth in the bottom of the third, narrowing the lead to 5-4. From there, it was all Winnipeg. In the fourth, Max Murphy broke the game open with a three-run homer to left-centre that scored Tripp Clark and Bramasco, putting the Goldeyes ahead 8-4. The offence continued in the sixth when Jacob Robson drove a two-run double into the left-centre gap to bring home Clark and Bramasco, making it 10-4. Murphy notched his fourth RBI of the day in the eighth, singling to right to score Clark and push the lead to 11-4. Moments later, Robson crossed the plate on a double play to extend the margin to 12-4. In the ninth, Clark capped the scoring with a single to right that brought home Warkentin. Jesse Galindo started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing four runs on nine hits over 2.1 innings, with two walks and two strikeouts. Zan Rose (W, 3-6) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four. The Goldeyes’ bullpen continued its outstanding stretch, having not allowed an earned run since last Tuesday. Weston Lombard contributed two scoreless frames with a walk and a strikeout. Derrick Cherry worked a clean eighth with one hit and two strikeouts, and Joe Jaco closed it out with a scoreless ninth, issuing one walk. It was the second shutout in three games for the Goldeyes – in fact, the pitching staff allowed just one run over series. Boxscore All the scoring was done in three consecutive innings. Jacob Robson got things started in the top of the third with a bloop single to right-centre field that drove in Keshawn Lynch to make the score 1-0 Goldeyes. In the fourth inning, Kevin García singled up the middle to bring home Matthew Warkentin , increasing the Winnipeg lead to 2-0. García was three-of-four on the afternoon and saw his batting average improve to .241 with six hits in his last four games. Robson led off the fifth with a home run onto the grass berm in left-centre field – his tenth of the season and third round-tripper of the week. – giving the Goldeyes a 3-0 advantage. Luke Boyd (W, 3-8) scattered six hits over eight innings of work, striking out a pair and walking two.
