Marcelo Homers Twice in Goldeyes Loss
LINCOLN, NE – The Lincoln Saltdogs (12-17) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-3 at Haymarket Park Wednesday evening.
Winnipeg (12-18) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when centre fielder Noah Marcelo crushed a 464-foot, solo home run to left with two out.
Lincoln quickly replied in their first at-bat. Left fielder Jairo Pomares tied the game with a sacrifice fly to centre that brought in centre fielder Cam Phelts. Moments later, right fielder Cary Arbolida made it 2-1 with a base hit to centre that scored first baseman Jake Hjelle.
The Goldeyes briefly evened the score in the top of the second after right fielder Max Murphy came home on a wild pitch.
The Saltdogs took control in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times to take a 5-2 lead. First, shortstop Paul Myro and catcher Jacob Morrow came in on a throwing error, then Phelts crossed the plate on a groundout to shortstop by second baseman Nick Shumpert.
Lincoln added three more runs in the fifth. Pomares scored on designated hitter Connor Bagnieski’s bloop single to centre field before Arbolida hit a two-run home run to centre to make it 8-2.
Marcelo led off the top of the eighth inning with his second home run of the evening, and eighth of the season to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Jacob Hughes (W, 1-0), making his first appearance with the Saltdogs, went six innings, allowing two runs on just four hits. He struck out seven batters and walked three.
James Bradwell (L, 0-1) started for Winnipeg, working two innings. He gave up five runs – three earned – on three hits, while fanning three and walking two. Kevin Vaupel, Quinn Waterhouse, and Dominic Hambley appeared in relief.
Bradwell was activated earlier Wednesday. He had been on the Inactive List since June 1, retroactive to May 24, the day after his only other appearance of the season against the Milwaukee Milkmen. In another transaction, right-handed relief pitcher Jack Seward was traded to the Welland Jackfish of the Canadian Baseball League to complete an earlier transaction.
The series concludes from Lincoln Thursday at 6:35 p.m. with lefty Ryo Kohigashi (0-1, 3.47 ERA) expected to take the mound for the Goldeyes. The Saltdogs will counter with right-hander Haden Erbe (2-1, 5.61 ERA).
