Explorers Hold Off Goldeyes in Series Finale

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers (17-20) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 9-7 at Lewis & Clark Park Thursday evening, taking the rubber match of a three-game series.
Sioux City jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead. Designated hitter Braulio Vásquez opened the scoring with a base hit to right field that drove in centre fielder Austin Davis and third baseman Zac Vooletich. Right fielder D’Shawn Knowles then hit a sacrifice fly to centre that brought left fielder Henry George in to score, before Vásquez crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice off the bat of second baseman Jackson Van De Brake.
Winnipeg (16-21) evened the score in the top of the fourth. Centre fielder Noah Marcelo tripled to right field to lead off the frame. He would come home on second baseman Adam Hall’s double to left. Right fielder Max Murphy singled to centre to bring Hall in, and catcher Kevin García drove in Murphy and designated hitter Jiandido Tromp with a base hit up the middle.
The Explorers wasted no time retaking the lead, however. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Vooletich scored on George’s double to right field that made it 5-4.
Sioux City increased its lead to two runs in the sixth when first baseman Alberto Osuna doubled to centre to drive in George.
Three more runs for the Explorers in the seventh inning seemingly put the game out of reach. Davis plated Van De Brake with a single to left that made the score 7-4, then a throwing error allowed shortstop Elliot Good and Davis to come home, giving the home side a five-run cushion.
The Goldeyes though did not go down without a fight. Three consecutive doubles to start the ninth inning by García, first baseman Roby Enríquez, and shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder trimmed the deficit to 9-6. Didder later scored on Hall’s fielder’s choice to bring the Goldeyes within two. For the second time in three games, Winnipeg brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning, but the ballgame ended when Murphy lined into a double play.
Josh Landry (W, 2-4) started for Sioux City and exited after the sixth inning. He gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking a pair. Trey Morrill (S, 1) snuffed out the Goldeyes’ rally in the ninth, recording the final three outs.
Mitchell Lambson (L, 2-4) allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings of work. He struck out one and walked six batters. James Colyer, Quinn Waterhouse, Derrick Cherry, and Dominic Hambley appeared in relief for the Goldeyes, who issued a season-high 13 free passes on the evening.
Marcelo and García had three hits apiece for Winnipeg, who outhit the Explorers 13-11.
The Goldeyes return home to meet the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Blue Cross Park Friday at 7:00 p.m. Tasker Strobel (2-1, 6.75 ERA) is expected to start for Winnipeg, while fellow left-hander Patrick Wicklander (2-1, 5.84 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for Fargo-Moorhead.

Boxscore Winnipeg right fielder Adam Hall scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning when he tripled and came in on a throwing error that allowed centre fielder Noah Marcelo to reach base. The Goldeyes extended their lead to 2-0 in the second after shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder was awarded home as the result of a balk called on Sioux City (16-20) starter Reed Butz. Second baseman Jackson Van De Brake led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to centre field that pulled the Explorers within one. Winnipeg crossed the plate three times in the fifth to make the score 5-1. Hall led off the inning with a home run to left field – his first of the season. Designated hitter Max Murphy then doubled down the right-field line to drive in Marcelo before himself scoring on a base hit to centre by second baseman Keshawn Lynch . Left fielder Roby Enríquez hit a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Schofield-Sam to cross the plate before catcher Kevin García tied the game with a base hit to right field that brought Didder in to score. García had three hits to improve his batting average to .327. Lincoln quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, however. Hjelle singled to centre field, driving in Morrow to make the score 6-5. The Saltdogs added an insurance run in the seventh when third baseman Jack Dragum hit a solo home run to left. Foster Pace started for Lincoln and took a no-decision. He allowed just four hits in five innings, striking out four and walking one. Gabriel Jaramillo (W, 1-1) entered in the sixth and was the pitcher of record when the Saltdogs went ahead. Tyler Stasiowski (S, 4) was the sixth Lincoln pitcher of the evening and struck out the side in the ninth. Goldeyes starter Luke Boyd gave up five runs – four earned – on eight hits in over five innings of work. He fanned two and walked three. The Goldeyes were batting in the fourth inning, trailing 11-1, when the tarp was deployed. Winnipeg now heads to the Nebraska capital for a three-game, midweek series against the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. Tuesday’s matchup begins at 6:35 p.m., with the Goldeyes sending Luke Boyd (3-1, 4.25 ERA) to the mound. Lincoln is expected to counter with fellow right-hander Foster Pace (0-2, 7.36 ERA). Boxscore After surrendering a four-run lead for the second time in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Goldeyes scored three times in the top of the tenth, then kept Fargo-Moorhead (12-16) from replying in the bottom of the frame. The RedHawks got things started in the bottom of the third when left fielder Jairus Richards hit a two-run double to left field that scored third baseman Brian Fuentes and shortstop Aidan Byrne. Winnipeg got one run back in the top of the fourth inning on right fielder Max Murphy ’s two-out solo home run to right-centre field that made it 2-1. The Goldeyes tied the score an inning later when designated hitter Jiandido Tromp homered to right, and they took a 3-2 lead moments later when first baseman Roby Enríquez scored on a fielding error after left fielder Keshawn Lynch doubled into the left-field corner. The visitors added three more in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead, with all the scoring coming with two outs in the inning. Tromp lined a base hit to right field that drove in third baseman Ramón Bramasco , then Enríquez doubled down the left-field line to plate catcher Kevin García and Tromp. For the first of two times Sunday, Fargo-Moorhead tied the game with four runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh. First, right fielder Dillon Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to centre field that brought home centre fielder Andy Nelson. Then, second baseman Colby Wilkerson lined a single to right that drove in Byrne and Richards. Finally, designated hitter José Sermo crossed the plate as the result of a two-out throwing error to make it 6-6. Winnipeg struck for four in the top of the ninth to take a 10-6 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the RedHawks erased their second four-run deficit of the afternoon on back-to-back home runs by Wilkerson — a three-run shot to right — and catcher Carlos Amaya. The Goldeyes, playing their second extra-inning game in four days, finally enjoyed some timely hitting in the bonus frame. Marcelo lined a single to centre that drove in Lynch and Hall to make the score 12-10 before scoring on Bramasco’s base hit to centre field. Fargo-Moorhead brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the tenth, but Eli Saul (W, 1-0) gave Winnipeg the shutdown inning it had been looking for most of the afternoon. Mitchell Lambson started for the Goldeyes and worked six innings. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking four. Dominic Hambley , Quinn Waterhouse , and Derrick Cherry followed out of the bullpen before Saul entered to record the final out in the ninth and then worked a scoreless tenth. Angelo Cabral (L, 1-1) pitched the tenth for the RedHawks, their fifth reliever of the day. Wyatt Cheney started and gave up six runs — five earned — on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Winnipeg stole six bases, including three by Hall and two by Marcelo. Eight Goldeyes had at least one hit, with Bramasco and Tromp notching four apiece.
