LINCOLN, NE – The Winnipeg Goldeyes pitching staff rolled into Saturday's tilt feeling great, coming off a two-run performance the night prior. However, on a sunny afternoon on the campus of the University of Nebraska, it would be the hometown Lincoln Saltdogs who would prove to have the higher hand, winning 9-3. The scoring started early for the Saltdogs when the leadoff batter of bottom of the second inning homered off Goldeyes starter Zac Reininger . Two more solo blasts would be hit in the third and fourth innings giving Lincoln a 3-0 lead. Another couple of runs followed in the bottom of the fifth from an RBI single, and two-run double pushing the lead to 6-0. Three more runs would come into score from an RBI triple, and a couple of RBI groundouts to move the total runs for Lincoln to nine. The Goldeyes runs were few and far between. Andy Armstrong provided the Fish with their first run of the ballgame in the top of the seventh on an RBI double scoring Ramón Bramasco from first base cutting the deficit to five runs. In the top of the ninth, the Goldeyes put pressure on by loading the bases. An RBI walk by Keshawn Lynch brought in a run, and an RBI hit-by-pitch scored the second run of the inning by Adam Hall . What would’ve been a big inning for the Goldeyes turned for nothing due to the Saltdogs’ pitcher needing the inning to end on a predetermined pitch count. Reininger got the start today for Winnipeg. The right-hander from San Antonio, Texas went four innings giving up three runs, all on solo home runs. Left-handed pitcher Tasker Strobel was first out of the bullpen, a shaky start to his outing ended up with three runs scoring on his watch. He did settle in and got a quick one, two, three in his second inning of work. Grant Townsend made his spring debut twirling two innings of his own. A couple of unlucky breaks led to back-to-back extra-base hits which both runners ended up scoring on. Finally, Brady Schanuel threw in the final two innings. After not throwing a competitive pitch for a season, he looked a little all over the place but finished strong without giving up a run. Post-game, Logan Watkins was understanding of his pitching staff’s scuffle in the second exhibition game of the young season. “What to take away from today, I think Reininger looked pretty good. Gave up a couple of solo shots. Tasker had a tough inning and then bounced back and had a scoreless inning. So it was good to see a couple of other guys kind of getting a knock on some rust off.” Watkins continued. “Schanuel hasn't thrown in a couple of years. So, on the pitching side, you gave up whatever it was nine runs today, but still feel pretty good about what I saw. As far as hitting goes, we only scratched out three runs today but had 11 hits. So, because it's still I think guys are getting their timing down a little bit and starting to get comfortable in the box. So we didn't win today but still feel pretty good about and feel good that we're making some progress.” Ryan Holgate had three hits of his own which led the ballclub for the day. Watkins mentioned that he likes what he sees out of his young outfielder. “Really excited to have him (Holgate). I think he's got a lot of upside. I know he told me before he got to Winnipeg that he had barely gotten any at-bats, so hopefully the more we keep throwing them out there and more at-bats he gets the more comfortable he's going to get so it was really nice to see him hit some balls hard today.” The Goldeyes and Saltdogs meet again Sunday in Lincoln with the first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. The pregame show will get underway 12:30 on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca. The Goldeyes begin the 2024 season on the road versus the Cleburne Railroaders on Thursday, May 9. The Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs at Blue Cross Park. SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Winnipeg Goldeyes took down the Sioux Falls Canaries 5-to-2 on a chilly Friday evening after a long bus ride. Regardless, the bats came out swinging and the pitching held the Canaries' offense to two runs. The offense started right out of the gate with an RBI single by Max Murphy to put the Goldeyes in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Ryan Holgate would drive in another run in the top of the fourth with an RBI scoring Dayson Croes on an infield single pushing the lead to 2-0. Sioux Falls would hit two solo shots of their own in the bottom of the fourth off relief pitcher Ryder Yakel answering back to tie the game up at 2-2. Winnipeg would answer back in the top of the sixth from a solo home run by Croes making the game 3-2, a lead that would end up being the decider. Croes would finish the day going 4-for-4 with three base hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. When asked about Croes' day, first-year Goldeyes Manager Logan Watkins was thrilled to see him get back to his hitting ways. “Yeah, (Croes) just picked up where he left off last year," said Watkins. “I’m happy he’s on my team now and not managing against him anymore. Me and Adam Donachie are sitting over there and one of the things he said was that he needed to save a few for later. But he’s young and he's got a lot left so hopefully it just keeps rolling.” The next run came in the top of the eighth from an opposite-field home run by Adam Hall , pushing the Goldeyes' lead to two. In the ninth, not wanting to feel left out of the bomber party, Rob Emery connected with a two-strike pitch and cleared the left field wall giving the Fish a 5-2 lead and the win. Colton Eastman got the start, going three perfect innings with one strikeout. Yakel followed going two innings, giving up two solo shots, and striking out two. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson trailed Yakel with two innings of his own with one strikeout. Finally, Justin Courtney tallied two innings of his own with a six-out-save and two strikeouts. Watkins was impressed by his club's result even after all of today's travel. “Looks like a few of our hitters are already looking like their timing is where it needs to be.” he reflected. “Obviously a couple of them probably still have some work to do. And then pitching, pitching looked really good. Everyone threw the ball well, and you know Sioux Falls put a couple of balls out of the yard on us in one inning. But you know, dangerous park to pitch in so it sometimes happens.” The Goldeyes will take on the Lincoln Saltdogs Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 pm. The pregame show will start approximately one half hour prior to the first pitch on CJNU 93.7 FM. The Goldeyes begin the 2024 season on the road versus the Cleburne Railroaders on Thursday, May 9. The Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs at Blue Cross Park. Townsend played last season for the Mexican League’s Bravos de León, where he appeared in 36 contests – all out of the bullpen. He went 2-1 with a 5.66 earned run average in 41.1 innings. The native of Federal Way, Washington was chosen in the 34th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Oral Roberts University (Tulsa, Oklahoma). The 26-year-old compiled a 4-3 record with a 5.40 ERA in 32 career games. “Grant is another good pickup for us. Last season was his first year back coming off injury and held his own in the Mexican league,” said Goldeyes skipper Logan Watkins . Before he was hurt, he showed he has the ability to strike guys out and I’m hoping he becomes a big part of our bullpen.” Schanuel (pronounced SHAN-yew-el) spent four seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers’ chain after having been drafted in the 27th round in 2018 out of the University of Iowa (Iowa City, Iowa). The 30-year-old was acquired earlier in the week in a trade with Gastonia of the Atlantic League, as the player to be named later in a December 15, 2022 transaction that saw pitcher Bryan Blanton sent to the North Carolina-based club. Brusa split the 2023 season between the Kane County Cougars and Kansas City Monarchs, for whom he hit a combined .258 with six doubles, three home runs, and 17 runs batted in over 31 games. He spent four seasons in the Giants’ system, reaching the Class-AAA level with the Pacific Coast League’s Sacramento River Cats in 2019. “Acquiring Gio is an unexpected lift to our lineup. He is an older guy who has shown he can hit with a ton of power and should contribute to the middle of our lineup in a big way,” said Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins . “The last piece to the puzzle was at first base and I think we found a great option in Gio.” Winnipeg now has 23 players under contract for the 2024 season. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the signing Wednesday of catcher Kevin García . The 31-year-old rejoins the Goldeyes after spending the past three seasons in the Mexican League with the Pericos de Puebla, the Acereros de Monclova, and the Aguila de Veracruz. García played 127 games for Winnipeg over the 2018 and 2019 seasons, combing for a .246 batting average with 18 doubles, five home runs, and 51 runs batted in. His 2018 campaign was cut short by a knee injury suffered June 30 – at a time when he had thrown out a league-leading 50% of the baserunners attempting to steal against him. Hailing from Calexico, California, García was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 30th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft out of Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, California). He spent two seasons in the Blue Jays’ system before signing with the Minnesota Twins in 2016. In four seasons in the affiliated minors, García hit .250 with two home runs and 54 RBIs. In addition to catching, he has played all four infield positions in his career. “Kevin is excited to come back to Winnipeg and be a part of this team,” said Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins . “Adding a guy like him with as much experience as he has will be a great asset to our pitching staff and clubhouse. Between him and Rob Emery I feel great about our catching situation, and I am sure our pitchers will be happy to have catchers they trust behind the plate.” Winnipeg now has 20 players under contract for the 2024 season.
