Goldeyes Top Milkmen 3-1 in 2025 Home Opener

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (5-6) opened their 2025 home schedule with a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Milkmen (4-5) Tuesday evening at Blue Cross Park.
Matthew Warkentin opened the scoring in the first inning with a bloop single down the right field line, driving in Ramón Bramasco. Milwaukee responded in the second on a fielder’s choice by Willie Escala that scored Glenn Santiago.
The tie held until the bottom of the eighth when Max Murphy’s single down the right field line reclaimed the lead for Winnipeg. Jacob Robson followed with an infield single, bringing Murphy home and stretching the lead to 3-1.
Ben Kowalski made his first start of the season for the Goldeyes, tossing six strong innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out four. Relievers Derrick Cherry, Tasker Strobel (W, 1-2), and Trevor Brigden (S, 1) combined for three scoreless frames.
Milwaukee starter Davis Welch walked six and allowed one run in five innings. Blake Purnell (L, 0-1) took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth.
The series continues Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CDT at Blue Cross Park with Winnipeg’s Mitchell Lambson (1-0, 4.09 ERA) set to face Milwaukee’s Garret Martin (0-0, 9.00 ERA).

LINCOLN, NE – The Lincoln Saltdogs (2-5) edged the Winnipeg Goldeyes (3-6) in a thrilling 3-2 victory in 11 innings Saturday night at Haymarket Park. Box Score Lincoln took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run from Rolando Espinosa. The Goldeyes struggled to break through offensively but finally tied the game in the ninth when Andy Armstrong ’s one-out infield single scored Keshawn Lynch from third, sending the game to extra innings. After a scoreless 10th, Winnipeg grabbed its first lead of the night in the top of the 11th. With Evan Alexander on to start the inning as the courtesy runner at second, a passed ball advanced him to third. Max Murphy then hit a grounder to shortstop Espinosa, and Alexander beat the throw home to make it 2-1 on a fielder’s choice. In the bottom half of the inning, the Saltdogs answered. With Tasker Strobel on the mound and the bases loaded, Yusniel Diaz hit a grounder to third baseman Ramón Bramasco , who couldn’t field it cleanly, allowing Parker Stroh to score the tying run. One batter later, Espinosa delivered again with a line drive to right-centre, plating Danny Bautista Jr. to secure the 3-2 win. Box Score Catcher Kevin García got Winnipeg on the board in the second inning with a two-run double. The Goldeyes extended the lead in the third with Matt Warkentin’s solo shot – his first of the season. Kansas City responded with home runs from Peyton Holt and Álvaro González to tie the game 3-3 through four innings. From there, Winnipeg’s bats exploded. Box Score The Monarchs jumped out early, thanks to a three-run homer from catcher Ryan Leitch in the second inning, followed immediately by a solo shot from Ross Adolph to make it 4-0. The Goldeyes (1-5) answered in the fourth with a solo homer from Ray-Patrick Didder , his first of the season. Kansas City extended their lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Leitch, before the Goldeyes clawed back in the seventh. A pair of throwing errors brought in three unearned runs, cutting the Monarchs' lead to 5-4. CLEBURNE, TX – The Cleburne Railroaders (3-1) hung on to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-5 at La Moderna Field Sunday evening. Box Score Cleburne opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a single to right field by right fielder Steven Rivas that drove in first baseman Kyle Martin. The Goldeyes (1-3) promptly tied the contest in their next at-bat when catcher Gustavo Sosa punched a ground ball through the left side of the infield to bring in right fielder Max Murphy and make the score 1-1. The game remained deadlocked until the top of the fifth inning when Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco smacked a double to the gap in right-centre field that scored centre fielder Jacob Robson all the way from first base. The Railroaders scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to move in front 4-2. First, shortstop Cooper Weiss hit a broken-bat single to right-centre field that brought in Rivas and designated hitter Anthony Brocato. Centre fielder Korry Howell then scampered home on a wild pitch to give Cleburne a two-run cushion. Two more runs came in for Cleburne in the seventh when Brocato doubled into the left field corner. Box Score The Cleburne Railroaders (2-1) fell into an early deficit when the Goldeyes veteran catcher Kevin Garcia collected his first hit of the 2025 season on a bleeder into shallow left-centre field scoring Max Murphy and Tanner O’ Tremba to a take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Cleburne starter Mike Shawaryn. Shawaryn pitched five innings giving up four hits, two runs that were earned walked a batter, and struck out three. Goldeyes starter Mitch Lambson in his 2025 season debut pitched five innings as well. Surrendering five hits, giving up two runs both earned, walking three, and striking out four. In the bottom of the second inning, the Railroaders got back within a run on an RBI single off the bat of Andres Sosa to get back within a run at 2-1. Box Score On what was another cooler spring evening in Texas, the Goldeyes fell behind the Railroaders (1-1) midway through the contest. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Dustin Peterson (3) singled off Goldeyes starter JJ Echevarría scoring Andrés Sosa from second base and giving Cleburne a 1-0 lead. In the same frame, Kyle Martin (2) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Cooper Weiss from third to take a 2-0 lead. Echevarría would not finish the fifth, and lasted 4.2 innings during which he surrendered six hits, two runs (both earned), and three walks. He struck out four. Winnipeg would answer in the top of the sixth. Box Score On an overcast and breezy evening, Cleburne edged the Goldeyes (0-1) in a tight battle that saw both teams going back-and-forth from the second inning on. Landen Bourassa took the Opening Day nod for the first time since pitching for the University of San Francisco and fired a six-inning quality start, allowing three runs on five hits, walking a batter and striking out four. Gabe Klobosits threw 5.1 innings also giving up three runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out three for the Railroaders. Cleburne would cash in their first runs of the night in the bottom of the second on a Lamar Sparks (2) two-run home run that cut through the 11 mile per hour wind and scored Steven Rivas to make the game 2-0. Winnipeg would answer back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half with a Mathew Warkentin (1) single scoring Ramón Bramasco from second to make the game 2-1. The Railroaders got their two-run lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning on the first of Dustin Peterson’s (1) two doubles on the night. With Shed Long on first base, Peterson hooked a skipping line drive past a diving Bramasco and Long scored with ease to make it 3-1. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the sixth inning when Max Murphy (2) came up to the dish with Ray-Patrick Didder aboard at second. Down two strikes, Murphy went the opposite way for his first home run of the 2025 season – a line drive that traveled 353 feet and left the bat at 100 mph. This chased Klobosits from the game and brought in Taylor Broadway who worked a scoreless 1.2 innings. Murphy’s home run was his 88th as a member of the Goldeyes, leaving him two away from tying Josh Mazzola for second most round trippers in a Winnipeg uniform. Regie Abercrombie is the Goldeyes’ all-time leader with 94. Ryder Yakel would make his first appearance in the bottom of the seventh inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Korry Howell reached on a walk and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Cooper Weiss. Peterson hit his second double of the game to put runners on second and third with two out. Former Goldeyes first baseman Kyle Martin hit a 24-foot swinging bunt down the third base line and on a bang-bang play at first was called safe. Wiess scored, giving Cleburne the lead back at 4-3. The Goldeyes responded again in the top of the eighth on a Max Murphy (3) sacrifice fly scoring Bramasco from third to tie the game at 4-4. The run would be charged to Bryce Bronnin who walked Bramasco to lead off the frame. Zeke Wood came in a worked a scoreless inning and a third to take it to the bottom of the ninth still tied. In his professional debut, Will Sierra came in to face the ninth batter and the top hitters in the Railroaders lineup. After a hit-by-pitch to the first batter he saw, he left the winning run in scoring position to force extra innings. In the top of the tenth inning, the Goldeyes courtesy runner was Kevin García who was lifted for Gustavo Sosa to run at second base. Kristian Scott (W, 1-0) would come into pitch for Cleburne for the start of extra innings. Andy Armstrong put down a sacrifice bunt to move the go-ahead runner to third. A wild pitch with two outs brought home the run to give the Goldeyes their first lead of the night at 5-4. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Trevor Brigden (L, 0-1) came into pitch, inheriting Martin at second. With Aaron Altherr at the plate, the former big league hammered a slider into the left-centre field gap to give the Opening Day victory to the home crowd.
