SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers (16-19) jumped out to an early seven-run lead, then held on to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 9-7 at Lewis & Clark Park Tuesday evening.
Sioux City opened the scoring with two out in the bottom of the first inning when right fielder D’Shawn Knowles reached on an infield single. Third baseman Zac Vooletich came home to make it 1-0. One batter later, second baseman Jackson Van De Brake lined a single to right field that brought left fielder Henry George and designated hitter Braulio Vásquez in to make the score 3-0.
In the second, Vooletich’s base hit to right field drove in catcher Dillon Tatum before Vooletich himself scored on George’s single to centre to make it 5-0. Vásquez then hit a two-run home run to centre field that extended the Explorers’ lead to 7-0.
George hit a solo home run to right with one out in the fourth to make the score 8-0 before Winnipeg (15-20) finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning on a double to left by shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder that drove in left fielder Keshawn Lynch.
The Goldeyes added three more in the sixth when centre fielder Noah Marcelo hit his tenth home run of the season – a three-run shot to left that also scored third baseman Ramón Bramasco and second baseman Adam Hall and cut the deficit to 8-4.
Vooletich lined a double to left field in the bottom of the same inning that brought centre fielder Austin Davis in to score, as Sioux City went up 9-4.
Right fielder Max Murphy hit a solo home run to centre with one out in the top of the eighth and Winnipeg made things interesting in the ninth. Bramasco scored on Murphy’s fielder’s choice to make the score 9-6, before Hall came in on a wild pitch to pull the Goldeyes within two. The ballgame ended with the tying run at the plate.
Zach Willeman (W, 2-3) went seven innings for the Explorers, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits. He struck out ten batters and walked three.
James Bradwell (L, 0-2) started for Winnipeg and lasted just 1 1/3 innings. He surrendered six runs on seven hits while fanning one and walking one. Weston Lombard and Willian Suárez combined to complete the game.
The series continues Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. when the Goldeyes’ Ryo Kohigashi (1-1, 2.87 ERA) matches up against Sioux City lefty Reed Butz (2-2, 9.60 ERA).
