Timely Hitting Leads Goldeyes to First Win of Young Season

CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (1-1) won their first game of the 2025 season Friday evening with a 6-4 decision over the Cleburne Railroaders at La Moderna Field.
On what was another cooler spring evening in Texas, the Goldeyes fell behind the Railroaders (1-1) midway through the contest. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Dustin Peterson (3) singled off Goldeyes starter JJ Echevarría scoring Andrés Sosa from second base and giving Cleburne a 1-0 lead. In the same frame, Kyle Martin (2) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Cooper Weiss from third to take a 2-0 lead.
Echevarría would not finish the fifth, and lasted 4.2 innings during which he surrendered six hits, two runs (both earned), and three walks. He struck out four.
Winnipeg would answer in the top of the sixth. Railroaders starter Blair Henley loaded the bases and gave way to reliever Austin Faith, who walked Evan Alexander (1) as the Goldeyes reduced the deficit to 2-1. Tanner O’ Tremba stepped to the plate with one out and found the turf in left-centre field scoring Max Murphy and Matthew Warkentin to take the lead. Alexander would hustle his way around the bases scoring from first to put the Goldeyes up 4-2.
The Goldeyes would add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning on two-run double by Ray-Patrick Didder scoring Jacob Robson and Ramón Bramasco to put the Goldeyes up 6-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Derrick Cherry (W, 1-0) allowed a two-run home run to Martin (5) to get the Railroaders back within striking distance. Cherry went 1.2 innings and gave up just two hits.
Coming out of retirement for Winnipeg, former Detroit Tigers pitcher Zac Reininger came in to put out the fire and earn a hold going 1.2 innings without giving up a baserunner and striking out three.
The Goldeyes called on veteran southpaw Tasker Strobel (S, 1) to work a scoreless ninth inning.
Blair Henley (L, 0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season. The right hander went 5.1 innings, giving up three hits, three runs (all earned), walking three and striking out six.
The series continues Saturday evening at 7:06 in Cleburne. Lefty Mitchell Lambson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Goldeyes the Goldeyes while Cleburne will send right-hander Mike Shawaryn (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the hill. CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (1-2) dropped the third game of the series by a final score of 5-3 at La Moderna Field on Saturday night. Box Score The Cleburne Railroaders (2-1) fell into an early deficit when the Goldeyes veteran catcher Kevin Garcia collected his first hit of the 2025 season on a bleeder into shallow left-centre field scoring Max Murphy and Tanner O’ Tremba to a take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Cleburne starter Mike Shawaryn. Shawaryn pitched five innings giving up four hits, two runs that were earned walked a batter, and struck out three. Goldeyes starter Mitch Lambson in his 2025 season debut pitched five innings as well. Surrendering five hits, giving up two runs both earned, walking three, and striking out four. In the bottom of the second inning, the Railroaders got back within a run on an RBI single off the bat of Andres Sosa to get back within a run at 2-1. The score would stay the same until the bottom of the seventh inning. Austin Fairchild (0-1) came into pitch replacing Lambson after the fifth inning. Fairchild pitched an inning and two third walking three and striking out a batter. Ryder Yakel went came into pitch with runners on first and second. A base hit to Aaron Altherr (3) brought home Lamar Sparks and put runners at the corners and a 3-2 lead. A batter later a double to Kyle Martin (6) scoring Dustin Peterson and Altherr giving the Railroaders a 5-3 lead. Jamie Arias threw a scoreless .2 of an inning giving up a walk. He handed the ball off to Taylor Broadway (1-0) who earned the win facing five batters and striking out two in a 1.1. Zeke Wood held the game going an inning and surrendered two hits and struck out two. Kristian Scott earned the save striking out a batter in the ninth. Box Score On an overcast and breezy evening, Cleburne edged the Goldeyes (0-1) in a tight battle that saw both teams going back-and-forth from the second inning on. Landen Bourassa took the Opening Day nod for the first time since pitching for the University of San Francisco and fired a six-inning quality start, allowing three runs on five hits, walking a batter and striking out four. Gabe Klobosits threw 5.1 innings also giving up three runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out three for the Railroaders. Cleburne would cash in their first runs of the night in the bottom of the second on a Lamar Sparks (2) two-run home run that cut through the 11 mile per hour wind and scored Steven Rivas to make the game 2-0. Winnipeg would answer back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half with a Mathew Warkentin (1) single scoring Ramón Bramasco from second to make the game 2-1. The Railroaders got their two-run lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning on the first of Dustin Peterson’s (1) two doubles on the night. With Shed Long on first base, Peterson hooked a skipping line drive past a diving Bramasco and Long scored with ease to make it 3-1. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the sixth inning when Max Murphy (2) came up to the dish with Ray-Patrick Didder aboard at second. Down two strikes, Murphy went the opposite way for his first home run of the 2025 season – a line drive that traveled 353 feet and left the bat at 100 mph. This chased Klobosits from the game and brought in Taylor Broadway who worked a scoreless 1.2 innings. Murphy’s home run was his 88th as a member of the Goldeyes, leaving him two away from tying Josh Mazzola for second most round trippers in a Winnipeg uniform. Regie Abercrombie is the Goldeyes’ all-time leader with 94. Ryder Yakel would make his first appearance in the bottom of the seventh inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Korry Howell reached on a walk and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Cooper Weiss. Peterson hit his second double of the game to put runners on second and third with two out. Former Goldeyes first baseman Kyle Martin hit a 24-foot swinging bunt down the third base line and on a bang-bang play at first was called safe. Wiess scored, giving Cleburne the lead back at 4-3. The Goldeyes responded again in the top of the eighth on a Max Murphy (3) sacrifice fly scoring Bramasco from third to tie the game at 4-4. The run would be charged to Bryce Bronnin who walked Bramasco to lead off the frame. Zeke Wood came in a worked a scoreless inning and a third to take it to the bottom of the ninth still tied. In his professional debut, Will Sierra came in to face the ninth batter and the top hitters in the Railroaders lineup. After a hit-by-pitch to the first batter he saw, he left the winning run in scoring position to force extra innings. In the top of the tenth inning, the Goldeyes courtesy runner was Kevin García who was lifted for Gustavo Sosa to run at second base. KANSAS CITY, KS – The Kansas City Monarchs (2-0) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-2 in a preseason contest at Legends Field Tuesday afternoon. The game was called after the top of the eighth inning to prevent pitchers from exceeding their pitch counts. The Goldeyes (1-4) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third frame. First Jacob Robson brought home Andy Armstrong with a one-out single to right field, then Kevin García scored on a Max Murphy base hit to left. With Winnipeg rallying, the inning came to an early end owing to Kansas City starter Patrick Pridgen having thrown his allotment of pitches for the day. The Monarchs got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning Jesse Galindo – who started for the Goldeyes – uncorked a wild pitch allowing Jaylyn Williams to scamper home. A warm spring evening mixed with the smell of new artificial turf was the right mixture for Kansas City’s offense. The Monarchs struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After Goldeyes starter Landon Leach walked the first two batters, former big leaguer Jorge Bonifacio blooped a shallow single into centre field to score Ross Adolf from third base to make it 1-0. Another walk would load the bases to set up a grand slam home run off the bat of third baseman Robbie Glendinning that give the Monarchs a 5-0 advantage. The inning would end due to Leach’s pitch count running high in the opening frame. The Goldeyes answered in the top of the second. With two out and Evan Alexander on, having reached with a bunt single, Jake Guenther continued his hot spring with an opposite field double that cut the deficit to 5-1. That score held until the bottom of the fourth inning when, after a leadoff double by Isiah Gilliam and ground ball that moved him to third base with two away, Lázaro Armenteros singled to left field to bring the runner home. The Monarchs regained their five-run cushion and never looked back. The Goldeyes had multiple threats with runners in scoring position however, all were with two out and they couldn’t find the extra hit needed to score the runs. A bright spring day saw the Goldeyes offense put up nine hits in the contest compared to the ten by the Canaries, who cashed in on their opportunities late in the game In the top of the first inning, after a leadoff double by Ramón Bramasco , Jacob Robson sent a towering home run to the opposite field to give the Goldeyes a 2-0 lead. FARGO, ND – After the Fargo-Moorhead area experienced heavy rain overnight, Thursday's American Association preseason game between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, scheduled for 11:00 a.m., has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at Newman Outdoor Field. It was to have been the second of two games between the two clubs, with the RedHawks having taken Wednesday's contest by a 6-4 score. Winnipeg will practice at an indoor facility in Fargo before heading to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for two games against the Canaries Friday and Saturday. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced Wednesday that the contract of two-time American Association post-season All-Star Dayson Croes has been transferred to the San Francisco Giants. Croes (pronounced KROOZ) becomes the 88th player in Goldeyes history to make the jump to the affiliated minor leagues. The 25-year-old was named the league’s Rookie Position Player of the Year following the 2023 season and has represented the Goldeyes in the league’s All-Star Game in each of his two seasons as a professional. Croes batted a team-leading .342 in 2024, with 22 doubles, five home runs, and 51 runs batted in. He also led the Goldeyes with 128 hits. Defensively, Croes played 41 games at second base and 44 at the hot corner. He committed just six errors in 267 fielding chances. In 2023, the native of Noord, Aruba hit .351, good for fourth in the league, while his 135 hits were best in the 12-team-circuit. Croes has compiled a .347 career batting average with 118 RBIs in 187 career games. Prior to joining the Goldeyes, the Croes spent three seasons at Quincy University (Quincy, Illinois) batting .388 with 20 home runs and 120 RBIs in 119 career games. “I’m extremely happy for Dayson. This has been a long time coming and he deserves this,” said Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins . “We would have loved to have him play for us again this year, but he’s proven that he’s ready for an opportunity in affiliated ball and I hope he takes it and runs with it.” “The entire Goldeyes organization would like to congratulate Dayson and thank him for his two seasons in Winnipeg,” said General Manager Andrew Collier . “On and off the field, he’s just an outstanding person and it’s great to see his hard work and dedication rewarded.” The Goldeyes announced two additional roster moves Wednesday, obtaining right-handed pitcher Jesse Galindo on loan from the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican Baseball League, and releasing right-handed pitcher Tylor Jans . Galindo, a 27-year-old reliever, had appeared in only one game for Quintana Roo this season, after seeing action in 27 contests in 2024. He posted an 0-1 record with a 4.25 earned run average in 29.2 innings pitched. Jans injured his throwing arm prior to the beginning of Spring Training and could join the club at a later date. On a cool evening on the North Dakota/Minnesota border, the RedHawks opened the scoring with a solo home run off the bat of Dillon Thomas to give Fargo-Moorhead a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off Goldeyes starter Landon Leach . The RedHawks would add to their lead with a couple of RBIs from Alec Olund on a ground out, and sacrifice fly by Brendon Dadson in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-0 lead. The Goldeyes got their scoring started in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI ground out by Jacob Robson scoring Braxton Turner who led off the inning with a double making the game 3-1. The Fish got their second run of the game in the top of the fifth off a no doubt solo home run by former RedHawks outfielder Evan Alexander , cutting the deficit to 3-2. The RedHawks would get those runs back in the bottom of the seventh after a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly and groundout. A wild pitch would give the home site a 6-2 lead. A native of London, Ontario, Robson appeared in four games for the Detroit Tigers in August, 2021. Robson was a member of the Canadian National Team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier. A left-handed bat, Robson returns to the American Association after spending the 2024 campaign with Gastonia of the Atlantic League, where he hit .277, with eight home runs, and 27 runs batted in over 42 contests. The 30-year-old was a member of the Kansas City Monarchs in 2022 and 2023, combining for a .262 batting average, 19 long balls, 65 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases. Robson was first selected by the San Diego Padres in the 30th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball June Draft out of Vincent Massey Secondary School (Windsor, Ontario). He chose to attend college and was subsequently chosen by the Tigers in the 8th round in 2016 out of Mississippi State University (Mississippi State, Mississippi). In 552 games in the affiliated minor leagues – including 300 at the Class-AAA level – Robson compiled a .283 average, with 34 home runs, 210 RBIs, and 111 steals.
