A new addition to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2026, Willian Suárez was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a city with one of the richest baseball traditions in the world and a long history of producing Major League talent.

Growing up, Willian drew inspiration from fellow Dominican right-hander Neftalí Feliz, who pitched 10 seasons in the Major Leagues and recorded 107 saves. Feliz was named American League Rookie of the Year and earned an All-Star selection in 2010, giving Willian another example of what was possible for a young pitcher from the Dominican Republic.

Willian’s own professional journey began in the San Francisco Giants organization, but it was not always an easy one. During a difficult 2019 season in the Dominican Summer League, he began to wonder whether his opportunity in professional baseball might be coming to an end. Manager José Montilla continued to believe in the young right-hander, however, providing encouragement and opportunities at a time when Willian struggled to see the potential Montilla saw in him.

That confidence proved important. Willian made significant strides when he later reached the Arizona Complex League and continued earning promotions through the Giants system over the following seasons.

After his time with San Francisco, Willian joined the Los Angeles Angels organization before making his way to Winnipeg. His path to the Goldeyes is one defined by perseverance and by the belief of a manager who helped him push through one of the most uncertain stretches of his young career.
