Matulovich Vexes Milwaukee Hitters as Goldeyes Split Series
FRANKLIN, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-37) defeated the Milwaukee Milkmen 5-0 at Franklin Field Sunday afternoon to earn a split of their four-game series.
Joey Matulovich (W, 3-6) and Chas Cywin combined for the shutout, limiting Milwaukee (37-24) to just three hits – all singles – on the afternoon.
The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead just two batters into the ballgame when rookie shortstop Keith Torres drilled a home run to left field. It was Torres’ first round tripper as a professional.
In the top of the third inning right fielder Max Murphy doubled off the left field fence to drive in third baseman Dayson Croes and Torres to make the score 3-0. Murphy leads the Goldeyes with 57 runs batted in this season.
Winnipeg added two more runs in the fifth to round out the scoring. First Torres came in on designated hitter Jacob Bockelie’s double into the left field corner, then left fielder Najee Gaskins brought Bockelie home with a bloop single to centre field.
Matulovich worked a career-high eight innings in which he allowed just two hits and struck out seven. He did not walk a batter. The 26-year-old retired the last 11 Milkmen hitters he faced.
Milwaukee starter Christian Young (L, 6-4) gave up all five Goldeyes runs in only 4 2/3 innings while striking out seven and walking three.
The Goldeyes return home to face the Sioux City Explorers at Shaw Park Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Winnipeg will send lefty Travis Seabrooke (4-4, 5.53 ERA) to the mound while Sioux City counters with right-hander Trenton Toplikar (4-1, 3.39 ERA). All the action can be heard on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca with Doug Greenwald on air with the pre-game show at 6:00 p.m.
