Lambson Shines, Goldeyes Fall in Extras
FARGO, ND – Dillon Thomas’ 11th inning single gave the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (27-26) a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-27) at Newman Outdoor Field Sunday afternoon.
With two runners on, including courtesy runner Brendon Dadson at second base, Thomas lined a 1-2 pitch from Ben Onyshko into the right field corner to end the ballgame.
The outcome did not overshadow what was one of the most impressive pitching performances in the American Association in recent seasons, by Goldeyes starter Mitchell Lambson. The veteran left-hander, who entered the game having pitched consecutive complete games, went ten innings and allowed just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. He did not walk a batter. What’s more, Lambson threw only 89 pitches – 69 of which were for strikes.
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning on a bloop single by Roby Enríquez that brought Ramón Bramasco in from third. The RedHawks tied it in the sixth when Juan Fernández doubled into the right-centre field gap to drive in Derek Maiben.
Onyshko (L, 1-2) was tagged with the loss, having given up the winning run (unearned) on one hit. Both of the southpaw’s losses have come in extra-inning contests.
Colten Davis (W, 3-6) pitched the final two innings for Fargo-Moorhead and did not allow a hit.
The Goldeyes are off Monday before beginning a six-game homestand Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when the Sioux Falls Canaries come to Blue Cross Park for a three-game series. Winnipeg has not announced their starter for the opener, while lefty Thomas Dorminy (6-0, 2.50 ERA) will get the ball for Sioux Falls.
Fans can join Trevor Curl for all the action live on CJNU 93.7 FM and online at cjnu.ca, with the pregame show beginning at 6:00 p.m. The game will also be broadcast in French on Envol 91 FM with Yanick LaRoche handling the play-by-play.
