Goldeyes Fall to Monarchs on Canada Day
WINNIPEG, MB – The Kansas City Monarchs (24-17) spoiled the Winnipeg Goldeyes’ Canada Day celebrations with a 7-3 victory over the home side at Blue Cross Park Wednesday.
Kansas City took control early, with designated hitter Luken Baker hitting a three-run home run to left field with two out in the top of the first inning to make it 3-0.
The Monarchs added to that lead in the third, with first baseman Saúl Garza lining a base hit to left that drove in left fielder Nick Martini.
In the top of the fourth inning, a two-run home run to left field by right fielder Trevor Boone extended Kansas City’s lead to 6-0.
Winnipeg (19-24) picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of that same inning. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco came in on left fielder Adam Hall’s base hit to left before designated hitter Jiandido Tromp singled home centre fielder Noah Marcelo to make it 6-2.
There was no further scoring until the bottom of the seventh, when Bramasco doubled to right field, bringing catcher Kevin García home and reducing the Goldeyes’ deficit to 6-3.
Baker led off the eighth with a home run to left, his second of the game and third of the series. That made the score 7-3 Monarchs.
Grant Gambrell (W, 3-0) went six innings for Kansas City, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked a pair of batters.
Tasker Strobel (L, 2-2) exited after 3 2/3 innings. He gave up six runs on ten hits while striking out six. Kevin Vaupel, James Bradwell, and Quinn Waterhouse followed out of the bullpen.
