Canaries Come Back to Defeat Goldeyes

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries (36-25) erased a three-run deficit and defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-36) by a score of 4-3 Thursday evening at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Goldeyes have dropped seven straight contests.
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the opening frame on a two-out double down the right field line by Matthew Warkentin that drove in Ramón Bramasco and Roby Enríquez.
The Goldeyes increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second when Jacob Robson brought Ray-Patrick Didder home with a single to left.
It was all Sioux Falls from that point on, however. Jordan Barth led off the bottom of the same inning with a home run to left field, and Calvin Estrada tied the contest in the third with a two-run home run to right.
A two-out single to left field by Trevor Achenbach in the sixth inning scored Estrada with the eventual winning run.
Canaries’ starter Seth Miller (W, 2-5) worked six innings in earning the victory. He allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits, while striking out two and walking five batters. Kody Dalen, Ryan Richardson, and Charlie Hasty (S, 6) limited the Goldeyes to just two hits over the final three innings.
Mitchell Lambson (L, 6-3) started for Winnipeg and surrendered four runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked three. Rickey Ramírez and Ben Onyshko appeared out of the Goldeyes’ bullpen – each working a scoreless inning.
The team now heads to Lincoln, Nebraska for the final three games before the All-Star break, against the Lincoln Saltdogs. Neither team has announced their starting pitcher for Friday’s series-opener at Haymarket Park, which is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT.

It was Winnipeg’s sixth consecutive defeat. Boxscore Sioux Falls took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Trevor Achenbach launched a two-run homer to left field, scoring Jordan Barth to make it 2-0. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the fifth. With Matthew Warkentin at third base, Ray-Patrick Didder lined a single to left to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Barth added insurance for the Canaries with a solo home run to right, extending the lead to 3-1. Winnipeg mounted a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth when Max Murphy belted his 12th home run of the season the opposite way to pull the Goldeyes within one, but the rally fell short. Cade Torgerson (W, 4-3) earned the win for Sioux Falls, working six innings while allowing one run on six hits and striking out four. The Canaries bullpen combined for the final three innings. Will Levine tossed a clean seventh with a strikeout, Cole LaLonde allowed a hit in the eighth, and Charlie Hasty (S, 5) closed it out in the ninth despite surrendering Murphy’s homer. Jesse Galindo (2-4) took the loss for Winnipeg, going five innings and giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The Goldeyes bullpen covered the final three frames. Boxscore The Canaries opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Mike Hart singled home Jabari Henry to make it 1-0. Sioux Falls added to their lead in the sixth as Matt Ruiz drove in Trevor Achenbach with an RBI single for the game’s final run. Storm clouds rolled in during the bottom of the seventh, bringing heavy rain that forced a 45-minute delay. After officials deemed the field unplayable with more rain on the way, the game was called after six-plus innings. Ryan Zimmerman (2-4) earned the win for Sioux Falls, going the distance in a seven-inning complete game. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Luke Boyd (1-7) took the loss for Winnipeg, surrendering two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Weston Lombard made his Goldeyes debut in relief, pitching two-thirds of an inning with one hit, one walk, and a strikeout. Rickey Ramírez pitched one-third of an inning in the seventh before the game was called. The Goldeyes announced a number of transactions prior to Tuesday’s contest. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-33) came within a base hit of a comeback win in the bottom of the ninth, but the Kansas City Monarchs (37-21) held on for a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park, completing a three-game sweep. Boxscore The Monarchs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. John Nogowski singled home Ross Adolph to open the scoring, and Blake Rutherford added an RBI single to right to bring in Jaylyn Williams for a 2-0 advantage. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the third. With Andy Armstrong aboard, designated hitter Ramón Bramasco launched his fifth home run of the season into the trees beyond right field to tie the game 2-2. Kansas City reclaimed the lead in the fourth when Joshuan Sandoval singled home Josh Bissonette to make it 3-2. In the fifth, Winnipeg grabbed its first lead of the series. After Armstrong and Keshawn Lynch reached base, Jacob Robson lined a single through the right side. A wild throw home from first baseman Nogowski allowed Armstrong and Lynch to score, giving the Goldeyes a 4-3 lead. That lead was short-lived. In the top of the sixth, Álvaro González doubled down the right field line to score Rutherford from second, tying the game at 4-4. Moments later, Bissonette hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring González with what proved to be the game-winning run. Boxscore – Game One Boxscore – Game Two Friday’s action began with the resumption of a game originally suspended due to rain June 8, with the Monarchs leading 2-1 after three innings. Kansas City wasted little time adding to their advantage in the top of the fourth. Jaylyn Williams and Josh Bissonette opened the inning with singles, setting the stage for an Alex McGarry RBI single to make it 3-1. Ross Adolph followed with a run-scoring single, and later in the frame, Jorge Bonifacio drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the Monarchs’ lead to 5-1. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the inning when Keshawn Lynch reached third and Max Murphy connected on his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field that cut the deficit to 5-3. Boxscore Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Matt Ruiz singled home two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Canaries extended the advantage to 6-0 in the fourth, with Scott Combs driving in Jordan Barth, followed by a three-run home run from Ruiz. The Goldeyes responded with a five-run sixth inning. With Matthew Warkentin and Roby Enríquez on base, Max Murphy launched his 10th home run of the season to cut the lead in half. Andy Armstrong later brought home Tanner O’Tremba on a fielder’s choice, and Keshawn Lynch followed with an RBI double to make it a one-run game at 6-5. Barth added to the Canaries' lead in the seventh with a two-run homer, but Winnipeg again answered in the bottom of the eighth. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-28) won their second extra-innings game of the season at Blue Cross Park Wednesday evening, edging the Sioux Falls Canaries (30-24) 7-6 in a ten-inning thriller. Boxscore Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Calvin Estrada singled home Josh Rehwaldt to make it 1-0. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom half. With Ramón Bramasco on third and Roby Enríquez on second, Keshawn Lynch delivered an RBI single past third baseman Estrada to plate Bramasco. A throwing error by shortstop Jordan Barth on the play allowed Enríquez to score, and Lynch advanced to third. One batter later, Max Murphy grounded out to bring home Lynch and give Winnipeg a 3-1 lead. The Canaries trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the top of the second when Scott Combs singled in Barth. In the bottom of the inning, Tanner O’Tremba blasted a solo home run to left field, restoring a two-run cushion at 4-2. Sioux Falls cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth on a leadoff home run by Mike Hart. But O’Tremba responded again in the bottom of the frame. After Murphy reached base, O’Tremba hit his second home run of the night – a two-run shot – to make it 6-3 Winnipeg. Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the top of the eighth. WINNIPEG, MB – The American Association announced Tuesday that Winnipeg Goldeyes infielder Matthew Warkentin and outfielder Max Murphy were chosen as starters for the West Division squad at the league’s upcoming All-Star Game. Pitchers Tasker Strobel and Ryder Yakel were also selected as members of the West Division pitching staff. In his first season with the Goldeyes, Warkentin has made his mark in his home country. The Windsor, Ontario native ranks first among all West Division first basemen in home runs (11) and RBI (36) while also recording a batting average of .290. The 28-year-old slugger joined the Goldeyes for the 2025 season after two productive seasons with the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League. This is Murphy’s second All-Star nod as a member of the Goldeyes, previously being selected in 2023. Already a fixture in the franchise’s record books, Murphy found another page to fill in his fifth season with the team, as he became the Goldeyes’ all-time leader in home runs, surpassing Reggie Abercrombie by hitting his 93rd home run in a Goldeyes uniform. He has registered yet another productive start to the season, hitting .267 with nine home runs and 37 RBI. Strobel is another two-time All-Star as a member of the Goldeyes, representing them in the 2022 game. A relief pitcher out of Avon, Indiana, Strobel has become a mainstay in the Goldeyes' bullpen for the past several seasons, and 2025 is no different. The 30-year-old has appeared in 24 games and has registered a 2.72 ERA and one save in 39.2 innings pitched. Also out of the bullpen, Yakel receives his first All-Star nod as a professional. The second-year Goldeyes pitcher has been outstanding in 2025, appearing in 24 games while recording two saves and a 2.21 ERA. He acted as a Swiss-Army knife for the Goldeyes in 2024, splitting time as both starter and reliever when the team needed to find coverage for innings, and he did that and more whenever he was called on. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will host this year’s All-Star Game in Fargo, North Dakota on July 22. Players were chosen by representatives of each club. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-28) built an early lead but couldn’t hold off a persistent Sioux Falls Canaries (30-23) offense, falling 12-5 in the series opener Tuesday evening at Blue Cross Park. Boxscore The Goldeyes struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Matthew Warkentin , the reigning American Association Batter of the Week, continued his torrid stretch with a two-run homer to left that scored Jacob Robson and gave Winnipeg a 2-0 lead. Sioux Falls answered quickly in the top of the second with a Peter Zimmermann RBI single that scored Calvin Estrada to cut the lead in half. The Goldeyes restored their two-run advantage in the bottom half of the inning on a Robson sacrifice fly that brought home Ray-Patrick Didder to make it 3-1. The back-and-forth continued in the third, as Jabari Henry’s RBI single plated Matt Ruiz to bring the Canaries back within one. In the bottom of the fourth, Winnipeg pushed its lead to 5-2. With Didder and Kevin García on base, Robson hit into a fielder’s choice, but an error on the throw to the plate allowed both runners to score. From there, it was all Sioux Falls. Henry led off the fifth with a solo homer, and Mike Hart followed later in the inning with a three-run shot that gave the Canaries their first lead at 6-5. The visitors added on with a Josh Rehwaldt sacrifice fly in the sixth, a two-run homer from Estrada in the eighth, and three more in the ninth—highlighted by a two-run single from Henry, his third and fourth RBIs of the game. Thomas Dorminy (W, 7-0) remained perfect on the year, picking up the win despite allowing five runs (three earned) over five innings. He gave up four hits, walked two, and struck out two. The Canaries bullpen combined for four scoreless innings. Will Levine, Ryan Richards, Cole LaLonde, and Christian Cosby limited the Goldeyes to just two hits the rest of the way. James Bradwell (L, 0-1), making his Goldeyes debut, took the loss. The right-hander allowed six runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five innings. Out of the bullpen, Derek Cherry worked 1.2 innings and gave up one run on one hit. Ben Onyshko tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
