Goldeyes Sign Alen

Add another important piece to the puzzle known as the 2010 Goldeyes.

Winnipeg manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of catcher Luis Alen. His arrival brings to 16 the number of players on the roster, six of whom are pitchers.

Alen, 24, returns to the place where he enjoyed his best season. Following time in Italy and before that as Marlins property, he had a career year in 2007 with the Goldeyes, batting a team-leading .333 (good for eighth in the league) with three home runs and 44 runs batted in. On defence, he posted a .993 fielding percentage while throwing out 28 of 88 potential base stealers for an impressive .318 caught stealing percentage.

Along the way, Alen represented the club at the Northern League All-Star Game, was named to the NL All-Star Team, was ranked by Baseball America as the top catching prospect in all of independent baseball and then named by the magazine to its All-Independent First Team. His amazing season was capped off when the New York Mets, in whose system he played the last two years, picked up his contract.

In eight seasons, Alen is a career .256 hitter with five home runs and 107 runs batted in. He also has a .987 fielding percentage, committing just 22 errors in more than 1,700 total chances.

Training camp opens May 4 at Canwest Park.
