Winnipeg will open training camp on Thursday with 29 players.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that outfielder Colin Roberson has been invited to training camp. Roberson received the invite following today’s closed tryout at Canwest Park, attended by 20 players, most of them from Manitoba with others coming from BC and Ontario.
Roberson, 24, came to town from Virginia. He was a late cut out of spring training by the Florida Marlins, in whose system he played the past three years out of Virginia Wesleyan College.
Workouts beginning Thursday are open to the public and will run most days from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. One of the highlights of training camp will come this Saturday when the players work out on the same day as the club’s annual open house, something they’ve never done since joining the Northern League in 1994.
Forney and his coaching staff will put all the new and returning Goldeyes through their paces from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The players will then board the bus to St. Paul for a pair of exhibition games with the Saints on Sunday and Monday.
