Where there were once months and then weeks until the Goldeyes opened training camp, there are now just days.
Entering their 15th Northern League season, the Goldeyes open training camp at Canwest Park on Thursday. Workouts will run most days from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are open to the public.
One of the highlights of training camp will come this Saturday when the players work out on the same day as the club’s annual open house, something they’ve never done since joining the Northern League in 1994.
Manager Rick Forney and his coaching staff will put all the new and returning Goldeyes through their paces from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The players will then board the bus to St. Paul for a pair of exhibition games with the Saints on Sunday and Monday.
There are presently 28 players on Winnipeg’s roster, evenly divided between pitchers and position players. More could be added Tuesday out of an invitation-only tryout the club will host at the ballpark from noon to 3 p.m.
