Two weeks until training camp, two more players on the training camp roster.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of catcher Dustin Richardson (right) and infielder Jesse Gibson. Both joined the club out of the Northern League’s open tryout last weekend in California. As the pair were added, outfielder Brian Aragon was released.
Richardson, 22, batted .282 last year split between Chillicothe of the Frontier League and Aiken of the South Coast league. It was his first year as a pro out of Mount Olive College, where he hit .359 in four years with the Trojans, including .410 as a senior.
Gibson, 22, is presently in his senior year at NCAA Div. II Missouri Western State but is not on the active roster. He last played as a sophomore at NCAA Div. II Lower Columbia College in Oregon, where he batted .336 with a .485 on-base percentage to earn all-star honours.
Winnipeg now has 28 players under contract, split evenly between pitchers and position players. Training camp opens May 1 at Canwest Park.
