Goldeyes Sign Lentini And Deal Young To CanAm League

Fish fans will be very happy with today’s news out of Winnipeg. Northern League pitchers, meanwhile, not so happy.

Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the return of two-time NL All-Star outfielder Fehlandt Lentini. He began the year in Mexico, but was released last week following 10 games with Tijuana.

Lentini, 30, batted .321 last year with 10 home runs with 54 runs batted in. His 42 stolen bases led the league for the second straight year, as did his 405 at-bats, and he was also the league leader with 53 extra-base hits.

A career .311 hitter in eight seasons, Lentini finished in the top five last year in seven league categories. His 128 steals are good for fourth all-time in the NL while his 99 with Winnipeg are second-most in franchise history.

To make room on the roster for Lentini, first baseman Walter Young was traded to Sussex of the CanAm League for a player to be named later.

Young, 28, batted .313 last year with 21 home runs and 78 runs batted in, splitting the year between first base and designated hitter. But with a surplus of players on the Goldeyes roster that can play first and with him occupying one of four coveted Veteran spots, he became expendable.

The move to Sussex will unite Young with two Goldeyes alumni. He’ll be playing for former manager Hal Lanier while playing alongside former outfielder Jorge Moreno.

Winnipeg opens training camp at Canwest Park on May 1.
