Four weeks from the opening of training camp, Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has all but determined who will take the field at Canwest Park come May 1.
Forney announced today the signing of pitchers Ronald Bay, Wayne Foltin and Aaron Jackson, all new to the Goldeyes after spending 2007 in affiliated ball. There are now 27 players on the Winnipeg roster, 14 of whom are pitchers. The training camp roster maximum is 28, but can be increased to 29 if the Goldeyes draft a player at next weekend’s Northern League tryout in California.
Bay, 24, (right) is a starter out of the Rangers system. A career 39-35 with a 3.75 earned run average, he’s a five-year pro with experience in the Cubs, Indians and Rangers organizations, including 38 games at AA and AAA with Cleveland.
Foltin, 25, spent the last three years in the Giants system. In 97 relief appearances, he’s 8-4 with a 4.41 ERA and 23 saves, including 17 in 2006 with Augusta of the South Atlantic (A) League under former big leaguer Roberto Kelly.
Jackson, 22, can start or pitch out of the bullpen. Drafted by Montreal in 2004 out of high school, he’s 13-21 with a 4.68 ERA in 87 appearances as Expos/Nationals property, including 27 starts.
As the three pitchers were added, another was deleted when Dan Ziegler was dealt to Rio Grande Valley of the United League to complete an earlier trade. |
