Goldeyes Routed by Canaries

Doug Greenwald • Jun 15, 2023

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium, the Winnipeg Goldeyes (12-17) tied a franchise record---unfortunately a dubious one as the Sioux Falls Canaries (12-19) defeated the visitors from Canada 19-0. The loss matched the most lopsided shutout in Goldeyes history which was also "accomplished" on August 25, 1995 at Thunder Bay. The 19 runs and 24 hits for Sioux Falls were the most this year for one game in the American Association.

Box Score

Every Canaries batter in the starting lineup had at least a hit. Sioux Falls had four innings of tallying at least four runs. The Canaries plated four in the second and third, and five in the fifth and sixth.

Sioux Falls third baseman Darnell Sweeney (9) finished 4-6 with a two-run homer and five RBI's. Other Canaries homers were by left fielder Jabari Henry (5)--a three-run clout, and two (two-run and solo) by designated hitter Mike Hart (4, 5). Right fielder Welington Dotel finished a homer shy of the cycle as he was 4-6 with three RBI's. Sweeney came a triple shy of the cycle.

Lost in all the offense was Sioux Falls starter Mitchell Walters (1-1). He pitched one hit ball over six shutout innings. The right-hander struck out five and didn't walk anyone.

The story was not the same for Winnipeg starter
Joey Matulovich (0-3). He gave up 11 hits, eight runs (all earned), and struck out three. The next Goldeyes pitcher, Josh Vincent had his worst outing of the year issuing 11 hits, ten runs (nine earned) over two-plus innings.

Winnipeg had just two hits but unfortunately none for third baseman
Dayson Croes whose 25-game hitting streak came to an end going 0-4. Over the 25 games he was 41-104, a .394 clip with a homer and 21 RBI's. His hitting streak matched Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien for the longest in professional baseball this season. Croes finished two games shy of the Winnipeg consecutive games with a hit record which is 27 set by Luis Ortiz in 2001 and Brent Metheny in 2008.

The Goldeyes and Canaries finish the series on Thursday at 12:05 p.m. Right-hander
Luis Ramirez (2-3) will start for Winnipeg against Sioux Falls left-hander Neil Lang (1-3).

GOLDEYES SCALES

This was the fourth game in Goldeyes history where the opponent has scored 19 runs. The two others were a 20-19 (12 innings) win over Sioux Falls in 1996, and a 19-4 loss at Wichita in 2017

One of the two Winnipeg hits was by pinch hitter
Chris Burgess. It was his first game since June 1st at Chicago where he had to leave after taking a foul tip off his right hand while catching. Prior to Wednesday he missed ten straight games

Tommy McCarthy substituted at third base beginning in the seventh inning. It was his first appearance there as a professional. Croes played second in the seventh and eighth innings marking his first time there as a pro

Center fielder
Brynn Martinez was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning. He extended his streak of reaching base safely to 18 games

Sioux Falls snapped a six-game losing streak. The season series stands Winnipeg 3-2

CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Cleburne Railroaders 9-0 at La Moderna Field Tuesday afternoon. After dropping the first four games of the series, the Goldeyes (2-4) shut out the Railroaders over the final two games, crossing the plate 25 times in the process. Box Score Right fielder Max Murphy opened the scoring just three batters into the ballgame when he bounced a single up the middle to drive in first baseman Jake McMurray . In the top of the third inning with second baseman Dayson Croes at first base after a lead off walk, Murphy struck again with a two-run home run to right field that traveled 371 feet. It was Murphy’s second long ball of the season, and it gave the Goldeyes a 3-0 lead. Before the inning was over catcher Kevin García smacked a ground rule double to right field that brought centre fielder Miles Simington in as Winnipeg extended their lead to four. The Goldeyes added a pair of runs in the fourth. First, left fielder Keshawn Lynch scored on McMurray’s double into the left field corner. Then McMurray was forced in on a bases loaded walk drawn by designated hitter Gio Brusa that made it 6-0 in favour of the visitors. A three-run sixth inning by Winnipeg rounded out the scoring. Murphy drove in his fourth run of the game with a double to left-centre field that brought in Croes. McMurray came in on a fielding error by Railroaders shortstop Bret Boswell. Finally, third baseman Ramón Bramasco lifted a sacrifice fly to centre field that allowed Murphy to trot in from third base with the game’s final run. Right-hander Colton Eastman (W, 1-1) started for the Goldeyes and worked five innings, holding Cleburne (4-2) to just two hits. He struck out five and walked three. Justin Courtney and Nick Trogrlic-Iverson split the final four innings to preserve the shutout for a staff that has allowed just one run over the past three contests. Railroaders’ starter Kasey Kalich (L, 0-1) allowed six runs – all earned – on eight hits in 3.2 innings. The Goldeyes have Wednesday off before taking on the Kansas City Monarchs at Legends Field Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Righty Zac Reininger (0-1, 7.50 ERA) will start for Winnipeg while Kansas City has not announced their rotation for the four-game series. CLEBURNE, TX – Although one team was shut out in both games, Sunday and Monday’s American Association contests at La Moderna Field could not have been more different. After being blanked 1-0 by the Cleburne Railroaders Sunday, the Winnipeg Goldeyes held their hosts off the board Monday evening, while scoring early and often themselves in a lopsided 16-0 victory. Box Score The Goldeyes (1-4) opened the scoring in the second inning when second baseman Dayson Croes hit a sharp single to right field to bring in Gio Brusa and Ramón Bramasco . Croes would later score on right fielder Max Murphy ’s ground out to shortstop which made the score 3-0. Before the side was retired, centre fielder Miles Simington doubled to shallow left field driving in designated hitter Jake McMurray . Simington would score the fifth run of the inning when he stole third base and then came home on a throwing error by Cleburne catcher Michael Berglund. Winnipeg added three more runs in the third to increase their lead to 8-0. First shortstop Andy Armstrong laced a double down the left field line that plated Brusa and Bramasco, who just slid past Berglund’s tag. Then Croes brought Armstrong home with a single to the left-centre field gap. The Goldeyes stretched the lead to nine in the top of the fourth inning on Brusa’s bloop single to right field that scored Simington. After the teams combined for two scoreless innings, Winnipeg would put up another crooked number in the top of the seventh, scoring seven times to make it 16-0. Simington doubled off the wall in right-centre field to drive in Croes. Catcher Rob Emery singled to left-centre field to knock in McMurray and Simington. Brusa hit a two-run home run to left, and McMurray wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single to centre field that drove in Bramasco and Armstrong. Croes had four hits on the evening, while Simington, Brusa, and Bramasco each had three. Croes and Brusa had three runs batted in apiece. Almost lost in the Goldeyes’ offensive fireworks was a one-hit, six strikeout performance by Travis Seabrooke (W, 1-0). Relievers Ryder Yakel and Brady Schanuel combined to pitch the final three frames for Winnipeg, not allowing any hits in preserving the shutout. Justin Kleinsorge (L, 0-1) started for Cleburne (1-4) and allowed eight runs – all earned – on ten hits over three innings of work. After his first win as Goldeyes manager, Logan Watkins said that “Baseball is a crazy game. The bats were a little bit quiet to start the year and we lost a couple of really close games, and then all of a sudden, we score 16 runs and hold them to just one hit tonight.” He added it was a “really great game, and you have to give a lot of credit to the guys for staying positive after losing a couple of heartbreakers." The series concludes Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. CDT with the Goldeyes sending right-hander Colton Eastman (0-1, 5.40 ERA) to the mound against righty Kasey Kalich (1-0, 5.40 ERA) in a rematch of last Thursday’s season opener. Trevor Curl will have the pregame show on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 10:30. The game will also be streamed free of charge at AABaseball.TV . The Goldeyes’ Home Opener at Blue Cross Park is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs. CLEBURNE, TX – The Cleburne Railroaders edged the Winnipeg Goldeyes 1-0 at La Moderna Field Sunday evening, handing the Goldeyes their fourth consecutive loss to start the American Association season. Box Score The contest ended with pinch runner Keshawn Lynch – the potential tying run – being thrown out at the plate after trying to score on a shallow fly ball to centre field off the bat of third baseman Ramón Bramasco . Cleburne (4-0) scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth inning when right fielder Carter Aldrete homered to left-centre field – his third four-bagger of the young season. The Goldeyes (0-4) had several chances to score. In the top of the sixth right fielder Max Murphy just missed a two-run home run on a ball that was knocked down by the wind on the right-centre field warning track. Winnipeg left the bases with one out in the seventh inning, but reliever Dylan Bice was able to snuff out the rally. Leading off the ninth, catcher Rob Emery came within inches of tying the score when he hit a booming fly ball to left field that bounced off the top of the wall and back into play for a double. Railroaders starter Kyle Johnston (W, 1-0) allowed four hits over five innings to earn the victory, striking out six in the process. Mark Washington (S, 2) worked the ninth and surrendered Emery’s double and a base on balls but was able to keep Winnipeg from scoring. Landen Bourassa (L, 0-1) pitched six innings and gave up one run on just three hits while striking out 11 – a league season-high. Grant Townsend and Tasker Strobel each threw an inning of scoreless relief, both striking out a pair. The six-game series continues Monday at 7:06 p.m. CDT with southpaw Travis Seabrooke (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starting for the Goldeyes. Right-hander Justin Kleinsorge (0-0. 0.00 ERA) gets the call for Cleburne. Trevor Curl will have the pregame show on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 6:30. The game will also be streamed free of charge at AABaseball.TV . The Goldeyes’ Home Opener at Blue Cross Park is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs. Photo Credit: Madison Blandford/Cleburne Railroaders CLEBURNE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes battled until the last pitch in game three of their series against the Cleburne Railroaders Friday. A late back and forth battle ended in Cleburne’s favour by a final score of 5-4. Box Score A weather delay pushed the game back an hour, and first pitch wasn’t until 8:00 p.m. Juan Hillman got the start for Cleburne and he was perfect through 5.1 innings until Keshawn Lynch broke up the bid with an infield single. Joey Matulovich took the ball for the Goldeyes and pitched well, tossing six strong innings of two hit ball. He gave up a run, walked two, and struck out four. The scoring started in the bottom of the second inning, when Carter Aldrete drove a double to left and brought home Hill Alexander to make the game 1-0. Kevin García tied the game up in the top of the seventh on a base hit to left field that scored Jake McMurray . On the same play Max Murphy would be cut down at the plate trying to score the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the seventh, Aldrete would get the Goldeyes again with a two-run home run to take the lead back and making it 3-1. In the top of the ninth inning Murphy blasted American Association career home run number 100 over the batter’s eye in to pull the Goldeyes within one. A couple of hits later. Ryan Holgate rifled a base hit to left scoring Miles Simington to tie the game. A sacrifice bunt by García moved the runners into scoring position. With two out, Andy Armstrong hit a short flair into right field, Gio Brusa scored as the go-ahead run to make the score 4-3 Winnipeg. Holgate slid into home plate hard and Cleburne’s catcher Michael Berglund look exception and shoved Holgate back to the turf. Holgate shoved back, causing both benches and bullpens to spill out into the area around home plate. Once the dust settled a weather delay was called due to thunder and lightning in the area. Berglund ended up getting ejected for instigating the brawl. In the bottom of the ninth inning after a 20-minute delay, Nick Trogirlic-Iverson was finishing his second inning of work looking to earn the win. A walk to Brian O’ Grady would set the two-out stage to Jaxx Groshans who entered in as the replacement catcher after Berglund was ejected. A mistake left right over the heart of the plate would end up over the left-field wall and Cleburne walked-off Winnipeg 5-4 on what is an early contender for game of the year. Postgame, manager Logan Watkins felt that his team’s fight was in the right place. “Good to see some fight from the guys,” Watkins said. “Got the bats going against maybe the best closer in the league so yeah that was good to see. And then we just made one mistake there in the bottom of the ninth to give up the game. But we have to get the bats going earlier in these games we kind of wait too little too late sometimes thankfully today we took the lead and just couldn't quite hold on to it. I mean, kind of tough to send Iverson back out there after a weather delay. Still thought he looked good going out for the 9th and had a couple strike outs in the 9th and just made one mistake.” The Goldeyes’ Home Opener at Blue Cross Park is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs. Photo Credit: Madison Blandford/Cleburne Railroaders CLEBURNE, TX – In a Friday night showdown between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Cleburne Railroaders, Cleburne’s early power swings led them to a 6-4 win over the Goldeyes at La Moderna Field. Box Score Jonathan Tripp got the start for Cleburne (2-0) and he was knocked out of the game in the top of the first inning after Max Murphy lined one right back at Tripp. He left the game to Theo McDowell. Zac Reninger took the ball for Winnipeg in game two of the six-game set. The scoring got started in the bottom of the first when a two-run home run hit by Thomas Dillard put the Railroaders ahead 2-0. In the top of the second, Ramón Bramasco hit a laser down the right field line that was originally signaled as a two-run home run to tie the game. However, after an umpire review, the call was overturned to a foul ball. The bottom of the second was highlighted by back-to-back home runs hit by Hill Alexander and Brian O’ Grady that pushed the Cleburne lead to 4-0. An RBI double by Carter Aldrete who was thrown out pushing for a triple moved the lead to 5-0 after six innings. Winnipeg (0-2) got on the board in the top of the seventh when an RBI single by Keshawn Lynch cut the Railroaders’ lead to 5-1. A few batters later, Bramasco scored on a wild pitch pulling the Goldeyes to within three at 5-2. In the bottom of the frame, a bases-loaded walk from Thomas Dillard brought the Cleburne lead to back to 6-2. The top of the eighth inning, catcher Rob Emery doubled to right scoring Miles Simington , reducing the lead to 6-3. The final run came in the top of the ninth when Adam Hall hit a double of his own, scoring Lynch and bringing the tying run to the plate at 6-4 with one away. Three pitches later, a ground out, and a fly out ended the game and sent Winnipeg to their second loss of the season. Justin Courtney and Ryder Yakel pitched in relief. Courtney went one inning, giving up a hit and a run with three walks, and three strikeouts. Yakel pitched an inning as well, only surrendering a walk. Postgame, Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins said he isn’t worried about his club’s slow start. “Feeling kind of mixed,” he said. “Reininger pitched pretty well. The biggest thing with this Cleburne team is that you need to keep them in the yard. Those home runs have been the decider in both games so far. Offensively we got started a little too late in the game, we made it interesting there at the end in the last couple of innings. It’s good to see Max Murphy barrel up a couple of baseballs, we’re going to need him to be Max Murphy for us. But we kept fighting. We were there again at the end of the game in the ninth inning, but when you are playing good teams, every out matters and every inning matters. Right now, if we clean up a couple of things, I think we are right there.” The Goldeyes’ Home Opener at Blue Cross Park is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs. CLEBURNE, TX – The Cleburne Railroaders defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-3 at La Moderna Field Thursday evening in the opening game of the American Association season. Box Score Cleburne (1-0) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Trent Giambrone singled to shallow left field to bring home second baseman Shed Long. The Goldeyes (0-1) evened the score in the top of the second on right fielder Ryan Holgate ’s hard single to right field that drove in left fielder Miles Simington . The Railroaders responded in the bottom of the same inning as designated hitter Brian O’Grady hit a two-run home run to right field make it 3-1. Winnipeg trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the third inning as third baseman Dayson Croes singled up the middle to score centre fielder Adam Hall . A solo home run down the left field line by right fielder Carter Aldrete in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Cleburne a 4-2 lead before third baseman Bret Boswell made it 5-2 in the seventh inning with a single to right field that brought Long into score his second run of the contest. The Goldeyes once again pulled to within two in the top of the eighth inning on Croes’ second RBI base hit of the game – another single to centre that also scored Hall. Winnipeg brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Simington led off with a double, but the Railroaders’ Joe Corbett (S, 1) was able to secure the final three outs. Kristian Scott (W, 1-0) threw 2.2 innings of hitless relief of Cleburne starter Kasey Kalich and was awarded the victory in a scorer’s decision. Railroaders pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts on the evening. Colton Eastman (L, 0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings of work. Tasker Strobel and Grant Townsend combined to pitch the final three innings for the Goldeyes. "It was a good Opening Day test for us, there was a good crowd here in Cleburne and a great atmosphere," Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins said postgame. "I think Cleburne has one of the better teams in the league on paper to start the season, with a ton of experienced guys and a lot of power. They're a tough team to deal with right off the bat and we were right there in the ninth inning with a chance to pull even and possibly win the game late. It was good for us to get the first one out of the way and hopefully we'll bounce right back tomorrow (Friday)." The series continues Friday at 7:06 PM with former Major League righty and Texas native Zac Reininger (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starting for Winnipeg. Right-hander Juan Hillman (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will respond for Cleburne. Trevor Curl will have the call on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca . KANSAS CITY, KS – The slow bats of yesterday were quickly pushed to the wayside as the Winnipeg Goldeyes collected ten hits to beat the reigning Miles Wolff Cup Champion Kansas City Monarchs 5-2. On a warm afternoon in KCK, Winnipeg played their best game of the preseason where pitching, fielding, and hitting all came together in perfect harmony. The scoring started right off the bat when Rob Emery drilled a single into left field scoring Max Murphy who had a pitch previously doubled off the left field wall giving Winnipeg a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, Keshawn Lynch found the jet stream to left field and tattooed his first home run in a Goldeyes uniform into the visitors’ bullpen to make it a 2-0 lead. In the next inning, Miles Simington led off the frame with a base hit and swiped second. A few batters later, Ramón Bramasco chopped an RBI single down the third base line and Simington would trot home giving the Fish a three-run advantage after the third inning. Later, in the top of the sixth, Murphy would blast his first home run this year atop the visitors' bullpen to push the needle even further to 4-0. The final run for the Goldeyes came in the top of the eighth inning when Andy Armstrong led off with a double the opposite way, getting to third on a stolen base. Dayson Croes ’ hard groundball to the shortstop scored Armstrong giving Winnipeg their fifth and final run. The Monarchs’ bats were the quiet ones today as Goldeyes starter Landen Bourassa carved up Kansas City’s lineup twirling five innings of two-hit ball and striking out six. Grant Townsend was first out of the pen throwing two solid innings walking two and striking out one. Tasker Strobel followed and pitched well in his one inning of work. A swinging bunt single and a two-run home run hit by Kansas City’s Ross Adolph reduced the Goldeyes’ lead to 5-2. Strobel would come back and strike out the next batter and get a flyout to end his inning with two strikeouts. Ryder Yakel came into the ballgame with a save situation and sat the Monarchs down one, two, three with two flyouts and a strikeout mixed in securing the Winnipeg win. Following the game, Goldeyes Manager Logan Watkins was more than pleased with his club’s effort. “I’m again pleasantly surprised.” Watkins continues. “Obviously in Lincoln, you know the scoreboard wouldn’t say we played well or hit well in that second game. I continue to see guys making strides in the box.” When asked about how his pitching staff looked, Watkins has enjoyed watching his staff grind out innings in the new year. “ Colton Eastman was fantastic in Sioux Falls, Zac Reininger looked great in Lincoln only giving up a couple of solo home runs but other than that he looked solid. Joey Matulovich and Landen Bourassa both looked fantastic. When Marshall Kasowski comes in, we expect him to fit in nicely. And Travis Seabrooke will get the ball tomorrow, so hopefully he can continue the trend of what the starting pitchers have shown so far.” Not to mention how well the bullpen has pitched up to this point, the Goldeyes pitching staff has looked excellent here in 2024. Winnipeg will wrap up the preseason with another matchup in Kansas City Tuesday at 12:00 Noon. The pregame show will get underway at 11:30 a.m. on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca. The Goldeyes begin the 2024 season on the road versus the Cleburne Railroaders on Thursday, May 9. The Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs at Blue Cross Park. LINCOLN, NE - In a low-scoring affair, the Winnipeg Goldeyes were only able to muster two hits in a tough 3-2 loss to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park Sunday afternoon. The scoring started early in an interesting way due to some unfortunate circumstances for the Saltdogs. Jackson Lindley got the start for Lincoln and in the top of the second inning after recording a strikeout, he threw the next pitch to Rob Emery and immediately felt discomfort. The coaching staff on both sides agreed to end the top of the second and move into the bottom of the frame. Goldeyes starter Joey Matulovich went out for the bottom of the third and gave up a solo home run to make the game 1-0 Lincoln. For the next four innings, the Goldeyes couldn’t scrap anything together until the top of the seventh when the bases were loaded up from three walks. Max Murphy stepped up and hit a medium deep fly ball to centre field, which was just deep enough to score to score Andy Armstrong and tie the game 1-1. Lincoln would immediately retake the lead in the bottom of the frame on another solo home run, this time off Justin Courtney making the game 2-1. The Saltdogs would play add-on in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double off Nick Trogrlic-Iverson pushing the game to 3-1. In the top of the ninth inning, Ramón Bramasco led off with a double down the left-field line and scored on an RBI groundout by Keshawn Lynch moving the deficit to 3-2, but the effort was too little too late. Matulovich got the start for the Goldeyes. He went five strong innings giving up the one run while striking out seven. Courtney was first out of the bullpen. He pitched two innings, striking out three, walking one, and gave up one run. Trogrlic-Iverson was the last pitcher out of the bullpen. He pitched an inning, giving up one run, and struck out a batter. Logan Watkins knows the offense is still settling into the new season. “You know, how do you call it a loss? We had an inning rolled where we only had one batter come to the plate. So, I think maybe that was going to be the inning where we put up a four spot,” he joked. “It was a good game. Really well pitched on our end, Joey (Matulovich) was efficient and sharp. Guys are still getting their timing back at the plate a little bit, and Lincoln has some good arms this year, so it's good for them to step in there (the box) and see good pitching.” The Goldeyes head off to Kansas City, Kansas to take on the reigning Miles Wolff Cup Champion Monarchs for game Monday and Tuesday to finish off their preseason slate. Monday’s contest, originally set for 6:35 p.m., has been moved to 2:00 in the afternoon. The pregame show will get underway at 1:30 on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca. The Goldeyes begin the 2024 season on the road versus the Cleburne Railroaders on Thursday, May 9. The Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs at Blue Cross Park. LINCOLN, NE – The Winnipeg Goldeyes pitching staff rolled into Saturday's tilt feeling great, coming off a two-run performance the night prior. However, on a sunny afternoon on the campus of the University of Nebraska, it would be the hometown Lincoln Saltdogs who would prove to have the higher hand, winning 9-3. The scoring started early for the Saltdogs when the leadoff batter of bottom of the second inning homered off Goldeyes starter Zac Reininger . Two more solo blasts would be hit in the third and fourth innings giving Lincoln a 3-0 lead. Another couple of runs followed in the bottom of the fifth from an RBI single, and two-run double pushing the lead to 6-0. Three more runs would come into score from an RBI triple, and a couple of RBI groundouts to move the total runs for Lincoln to nine. The Goldeyes runs were few and far between. Andy Armstrong provided the Fish with their first run of the ballgame in the top of the seventh on an RBI double scoring Ramón Bramasco from first base cutting the deficit to five runs. In the top of the ninth, the Goldeyes put pressure on by loading the bases. An RBI walk by Keshawn Lynch brought in a run, and an RBI hit-by-pitch scored the second run of the inning by Adam Hall . What would’ve been a big inning for the Goldeyes turned for nothing due to the Saltdogs’ pitcher needing the inning to end on a predetermined pitch count. Reininger got the start today for Winnipeg. The right-hander from San Antonio, Texas went four innings giving up three runs, all on solo home runs. Left-handed pitcher Tasker Strobel was first out of the bullpen, a shaky start to his outing ended up with three runs scoring on his watch. He did settle in and got a quick one, two, three in his second inning of work. Grant Townsend made his spring debut twirling two innings of his own. A couple of unlucky breaks led to back-to-back extra-base hits which both runners ended up scoring on. Finally, Brady Schanuel threw in the final two innings. After not throwing a competitive pitch for a season, he looked a little all over the place but finished strong without giving up a run. Post-game, Logan Watkins was understanding of his pitching staff’s scuffle in the second exhibition game of the young season. “What to take away from today, I think Reininger looked pretty good. Gave up a couple of solo shots. Tasker had a tough inning and then bounced back and had a scoreless inning. So it was good to see a couple of other guys kind of getting a knock on some rust off.” Watkins continued. “Schanuel hasn't thrown in a couple of years. So, on the pitching side, you gave up whatever it was nine runs today, but still feel pretty good about what I saw. As far as hitting goes, we only scratched out three runs today but had 11 hits. So, because it's still I think guys are getting their timing down a little bit and starting to get comfortable in the box. So we didn't win today but still feel pretty good about and feel good that we're making some progress.” Ryan Holgate had three hits of his own which led the ballclub for the day. Watkins mentioned that he likes what he sees out of his young outfielder. “Really excited to have him (Holgate). I think he's got a lot of upside. I know he told me before he got to Winnipeg that he had barely gotten any at-bats, so hopefully the more we keep throwing them out there and more at-bats he gets the more comfortable he's going to get so it was really nice to see him hit some balls hard today.” The Goldeyes and Saltdogs meet again Sunday in Lincoln with the first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. The pregame show will get underway 12:30 on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca. The Goldeyes begin the 2024 season on the road versus the Cleburne Railroaders on Thursday, May 9. The Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs at Blue Cross Park.
